Saint Vincent Drops Shootout to Frostburg State

LATROBE (April 16) - Saint Vincent saw its five-game winning streak snapped with a 15-13 loss against Frostburg State (Md.) at Chuck Noll Field.

With the loss, the Bearcats end the regular season with a 9-3 record and hold hosting rights in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament which will take place in Latrobe on Friday-Saturday, April 25-26. The Bobcats improve to 4-11.

SVC led 4-0 through the first 7:34 of the game as Maggie Garvey scored the opening goal at 24:58 and then assisted on a pair of scores by Kaley Burkardt at 23:44 and 22:36. Sarah Wallerstedt scored 10 seconds after Burkardt's second goal to push the margin to four.

Frostburg State answered with two goals in 23 seconds to make it 4-2. Burkardt recorded her hat-trick goal at 15:50 to give SVC a 5-2 lead. The Bobcats then scored 11-straight goals, including six in the first half as they took an 8-5 lead into halftime.

With the 5-0 spurt to start the second half, SVC found itself down 13-5 with 21:44 to play. Helena Shoplik snapped the skid with a goal at 21:23 from Wallerstedt. After a seven minute drought by both teams, Natalie Ambrozic made it 13-7 at 14:24.

A pair of FSU goals proved to be enough to push the game out of hand, as SVC rallied with six goals over the final 8:37, but it was too late as they fell 15-13.

Frostburg State led on shots, 36-26, but SVC picked up more ground balls, 41-31.

The Bobcats converted on six of their seven free-position attempts, dramatically changing the dynamic of the game. SVC was just one of four in the same scenario.

Molly Snyder had a game-high six points (one goal, five assists) to pace SVC. Burkardt finished with five goals and Wallerstedt posted a hat trick en route to five points. Garvey added four points (two goals, two assists).

Christine Cook made her first career start in goal and suffered the loss after making five saves in 60 minutes.
