No. 1 RIT Holds on for One-Goal Win in Battle with No. 9 Union

ROCHESTER, NY The No. 1 RIT (14-0, 4-0 Liberty League) lacrosse team had a battle on its hands Wednesday afternoon, holding on to beat No. 9 Union (10-2, 3-1 Liberty League) 8-7 in a match-up for first place in the Liberty League.

Junior goalie Pat Johnston (Long Beach, CA/Norwell (MA)) was outstanding in net for RIT, making 15 saves. Sophomore Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) scooped up seven ground balls, while Jay Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) and Baird Wilber (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) each caused two turnovers.

Tyler Brooks-Lambert (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) won 11 of 19 face-offs and grabbed six ground balls. Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA/Inglemoor) and Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) each scored three goals, while Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) dished out a pair of assists.

RIT outshot Skidmore, 40-37. The Tigers grabbed 42 ground balls to 22 for the Dutchmen, and went 21 of 23 on clearing attempts, while Union went 16 of 24 on clears. The Tigers went scoreless on both of its man-up chances, and Union went 1 for 4 on man-up.

Tom Stanton led Union with three goals. Nolan Stauffer, Rob Santangelo, Paul Alberti and Adam Rosenthal each scored once for the Dutchmen who drop their first league game of the season. Stafan Basile was excellent in net for Union, making 16 saves and holding the Tigers high-powered offense to just eight goals.

Rosenthal gave Union a 1-0 lead at 9:33 of the first quarter on his ninth goal of the season.

Kiesa answered for RIT at 4:26, tying the score at 1-1 on his tenth goal of the season.

Wisman opened the scoring in the second quarter, taking a feed from Aquin from midfield and sweeping in for his 19th goal of the season, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Kiesa made it 3-1 RIT with his second goal of the game at 9:22 of the second quarter. He drove around his defender and beat Basile with a well-placed shot.

Stanton cut the RIT lead to 3-2 at 5:18 of the second quarter on his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

Consecutive goals from Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) gave RIT a 5-2 lead late in the first half. Lee scored off a face-off win by Brooks-Lambert, tallying his 31st goal of the season. Wallace drove around his defender and fired a shot that beat Basile clean for a two-goal edge for the Tigers at the half.

Union scored the only two goals of the third quarter. Stanton tallied his second of the game to open the scoring in the quarter, cutting RIT's lead to 5-3 at 9:20. Stauffer made it 5-4 RIT on his 13th goal of the season with 7:56 to play.

Wisman gave RIT the momentum early in the fourth quarter, tallying at 14:11 of the quarter giving RIT a 6-4 lead.

After a Santangelo goal made it 6-5 RIT, goals from Wisman and Kiesa gave RIT an 8-5 lead with 8:30 to play in regulation. Wisman scored off an assist from Aquin, while Kiesa drove around his defender and beat Basile for his 12th goal of the season.

Union would not go away however, pulling to within 8-6 with 1:02 to play on Stanton's third goal of the afternoon. Paul Alberti made it 8-7 with five seconds to play, scoring on a man-up play.

Johnston was big in net for RIT, making eight second-half saves, including three huge saves in the fourth quarter from the doorstep when Union was threatening. Brooks-Lambert won several key face-offs down the stretch for RIT.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, April 19 when the Tigers host Skidmore College at 5:00 p.m. on the grass of Tiger Stadium.
