Elmira Doubled Up by St. John Fisher

The St. John Fisher lacrosse team used a 14-1 run over a span of three quarters to defeat host Elmira 18-9 on Wednesday in an Empire 8 Conference match-up.

With the win, Fisher improves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 2-9, 1-4.

Senior Jeff Wester set the Fisher record for assists in game with eight and tallied nine points (one shy of the College's single-game point mark). The senior broke the old mark of seven, set in 2011 by Connor Henderson and in 2007 by Dave Malone.

Elmira scored the game's opening goal with 9:30 left in the first quarter and the lead would stick for most of the opening period. Fisher tied the game with 2:45 left in the period and took the lead for good just 42 seconds later on back-to-back goals from Gary Bova.

The Cardinals scored four goals in a 4:39 span early in the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead and pushed its margin to six goals at 8-2 going into the locker room.

Fisher picked up right where it left off in the second half, scoring six straight goals in the opening 10 minutes of third quarter and never looked back.

Senior Taylor Muztafago tallied eight ground balls and caused three turnovers. Classmate David Haseley added five ground balls and created two turnovers. He also finished with three points on two goals and one assist, as did Bova.

Brett Farrell and Nick Rossi both finished with three goals, while Drew Brown scored twice.

Devin Trifeletti, Kevin Bronson, Greg Ramsden, Michael Russell and Tim Wagner both scored a goal as well.

Jerry Warner was 12 for 13 at faceoffs, while scooping up four ground balls. He also registered one assist.

Kevin O'Donnell also chipped in with four ground balls and was 6 of 10 at the X.

Jamie Campagna earned the win in goal, tallying six saves in the opening 42 minutes.

Fisher returns to action at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Alfred.
