Saint Michaael's Drops OT Decision to Franklin Pierce

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Franklin Pierce junior Eddie Noonan (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) scored 1:48 into overtime on Wednesday to help the Ravens defeat the Saint Michael's lacrosse team, 9-8, on Duffy Field in a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Purple Knights slipped to 3-9 overall and 3-6 in the league, suffering their third loss by two goals or less, while Franklin Pierce is 6-5 and 4-5.

Seniors Tim McDonald (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Asa Sargent (Ripton, Vt./Middlebury Union) both scored twice for the hosts, while classmate Cooper Quenneville (Shoreham, Vt./Gould Academy) went 15 for 16 on face-offs with 11 ground balls. Sophomore Jamie McGill (Needham, Mass./Needham) tallied one goal and one assist.

Junior defender Luke Solms (Bedford, N.H./Northfield Mount Hermon) had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, and sophomore T.J. Bicknell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) collected 12 saves. Junior Matt Dromeshauser (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and first-years Tim Connor (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and Ben Overslaugh (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) all scored once.

Junior Kevin Dargin (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) paced the Ravens with four goals, and Noonan finished with two goals and three assists. Junior Don Denman (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) made 17 stops.

The Purple Knights scored the first five goals of the game after a little more than nine minutes had elapsed in the opening quarter. Quenneville won the opening draw and fed McDonald for the go-ahead marker 15 seconds in, Connor tallied off a rebound at 10:25, and Dromeshauser, Overslaugh and McGill scored within a 1:47 stretch to make it 5-0 by the time 5:50 remained in the quarter. The Ravens slowly chipped away, with Dargin scoring twice in the second period before Noonan produced a 5-3 margin at 1:24, but McDonald found the back of the net with 18 seconds to go, and Saint Michael's led 6-3 at halftime.

Sargent countered senior Alex Connolly's (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket) man-up goal for the visitors with his first tally at 4:37 of the third, keeping the Purple and Gold in front by a 7-4 count, but Connolly tied the game on another extra-man strike with 6:45 remaining in regulation, and Dargin capped a 4-0 run with 2:44 left to put his team on top. However, Sargent scored on a solo effort with 17.3 ticks left to knot the game, and Quenneville won the ensuing face-off, but the hosts turned the ball over before firing off a game-winning attempt.

In overtime, Quenneville won the opening draw before Franklin Pierce caused a turnover in the first minute of the extra session, cleared the zone and called a timeout. Midway through the second minute of the period, Bicknell made back-to-back saves, but sophomore Brenden Caldeira (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) picked up a ground ball off of the second stop and fed Noonan for the winner.

Saint Michael's plays for the second time in three days at American International College on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
