Hawks Fly Past Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY- Thirteen Hawks got into the scoring column as Hartwick snapped its four game winless streak with a 22-4 rout of Houghton on Wednesday afternoon at Burke Field. 'Wick scored eight straight times in the first quarter on its way to the lopsided victory.

Hartwick improves its record to 3-8 overall while the Highlanders fall to 0-13. The 22 goals scored by the Hawks are the most since defeating Mount Saint Mary 24-4 in their home opener in 2011.

Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset) tied a career and season-high with six goals. Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) tied a career-high with four scores. Brendan Dieck (Lafayette Hill, PA/Delaware Valley Friends) had two goals.

Sean Brown (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville), Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North), Connor Long (Hardwick, NY/Blair Academy), Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip), Adam Goss (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North), Adam Abreu (Huntington, NY/Harborfields), Xavier Clair (Walden, NY/Valley Central), Nick Oliver (Mahopac, NYMahopac), and Brandon Manfredo (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) all scored one goal apiece. Brown and Ciolino both had a game-high three assists.

Gropper scored Hartwick's first three goals in just over two minutes in the first quarter to go up 3-0. After Simmons tallied a score at 10:05, Gropper tacked on two more goals to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead at 5:58. Simmons added one goal and Ciolino tallied once to move ahead 8-0 before the Highlanders got on the board with 50 seconds remaining in the first frame. Gropper would assist Manfredo on his goal to give 'Wick a 9-1 lead.

In the second quarter, the Hawks outscored Houghton 6-1 to surge ahead 15-2 at halftime. 'Wick continued its onslaught in the third and fourth and periods as it outscored the Highlanders 7-2.

Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) got the win in goal as he only faced two shots and surrendered just one goal. The trio of Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway), Luke Tetrault (Lynnfield, Ma/Austin Prep), and Sam Nowak (Buffalo, NY/Lockport) combined for three goals given up and had seven saves.

The Highlanders got two goals from Paul Chapman. Cameron Goff and Joshua Bailey added one goal each. Joshua Haingray had three saves in goal. He was relieved by Gabriel Browning who stopped eight shots.

The Hawks led in shots, 46-20, and in ground balls, 54-27. Taylor Lee (Germantown, NY/Red Hook) scooped up eight groundballs while winning 8 out of 10 face-offs.

Hartwick returns to action on Saturday for its final home game of the season at Wright Stadium. The Hawks will host #11 Ithaca College at 3:00 p.m.
