Streaking Bullets Fly Past Cardinals

WASHINGTON, D.C. Junior Mandy Buell (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) tied a personal best with six points, junior Bridget Kenny (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) grabbed 11 draw controls, and senior Kelsey Markiewicz (Taconic, Conn./Berkshire School (Mass.)) reached 200 career points as fifth-ranked Gettysburg routed Catholic University 19-10 in non-conference lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Gettysburg (12-1) busted out with seven of the game's first eight goals. After Catholic (8-5) tied the game 1-1, the Bullets rattled off six consecutive scores to take a 7-1 lead with 18:18 to play. Kenny helped key the run with four consecutive draw controls, while Markiewicz picked up her 200th career point with an assist to senior Loren Pruitt (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) at 19:47.

After the Cardinals turned in back-to-back scores, sophomore defender Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) found the back of the net for the second time in the game at 7:42, kick-starting a three-goal run by the visitors. Catholic added a goal before the buzzer to make it 10-4 at halftime.

Each time Catholic scored in the second period, Gettysburg answered. Three consecutive goals, including Buell's team-high fourth with 12:31 to play, gave the Bullets a 19-8 lead with under five minutes remaining.

Gettysburg once again dominated the draw circle, winning 23 of 31 draw controls in the contest. Over the last three outings, the Bullets have averaged 21.3 draw controls per contest. Kenny has led the charge out of the circle and her total against Catholic was the most by a Bullet since Megan Murphy '03 tied her own school record with 13 draw controls against Bryn Mawr College on April 19, 2001.

Gettysburg also posted a season high with eight free-position goals, missing just twice from the eight-meter arc. The Bullets finished with a 36-21 advantage in shots and a 25-15 lead in ground balls.

Buell tied her personal high for points with four goals and two assists. She also scooped up a career-best four ground balls. Kenny added three goals, while Tropsa, Pruitt, senior Katie Blumenthal (Malvern, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), and sophomores Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) and Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) each produced a pair of goals.

Markiewicz notched a goal and an assist to reach 200 career points exactly. She is the 10th Bullet to reach the milestone and she has now scored at least one point in 69 consecutive games.

Defensively, freshman Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) picked up seven saves in the victory. Senior Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) accumulated two caused turnovers and two ground balls and classmate Paige McKenna (Chatham, N..J./Chatham) logged four ground balls and one caused turnover.

Theresa Ciletti led Catholic with four goals and one assist.
