#2 Le Moyne Clinches Upstate Challenge with Win at Saint Rose

Albany, N.Y. Sophomore attackman Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) recorded six points in the first half to lead Le Moyne to a 16-4 win over Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Sullivan Field.

With the victory, Le Moyne earned its seventh point in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the Dolphins and Golden Knights to retain the trophy. With just the baseball point to be decided, Le Moyne holds a 7-6 advantage. Saint Rose won the trophy, 7.5-6.5, during the 2011-12 academic year, while the Dolphins recorded an 8-6 win last year.

The Dolphins, who scored the first five goals of the game, got on the scoreboard just 18 seconds into the contest on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Kam Bumpus (Marshfield, Mass./Needham/Bridgton Academy). Junior attackman Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) put the Dolphins up 2-0 65 seconds later by finishing off a feed from senior midfielder Andrew Chadderdon (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn).

Following five minutes of scoreless action, sophomore midfielder Nick Kline (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) netted his third goal of the year off a feed from Jenkins. Bumpus tallied his 15th goal of the season just 33 seconds later. Chadderdon, the reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week, capped the streak with an unassisted tally at the 7:21 mark.

Saint Rose got into the scoring column with 5:19 left in the quarter on an unassisted goal by Kris Miller.

The Dolphins scored three times over the final 2:20 of the quarter to take an 8-1 lead. Freshman midfielder Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) started the run at the 2:20 mark by finishing off a pass from high school teammate Jenkins in their return to the Capital District. Jenkins followed with his 17th goal of the campaign with 1:04 left, while feeding junior midfielder Chris Breiner (Troy, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) with 28 seconds remaining.

The teams traded goals over a span of two and one-half minutes midway through the second quarter. Saint Rose started the exchange with a goal by Evan Helming off a pass from Colin Sorber with 10:21 remaining. Jenkins answered with an unassisted goal 49 seconds later. Off the ensuing faceoff, Ryan McFee picked up the ball and raced up field to net his fourth goal of the year.

Kelly gave the Dolphins their seven-goal lead back by converting a feed from Jenkins in an extra-man situation with 7:52 left. Kelly pushed the lead to eight 90 seconds later after receiving a pass from senior attackman Chris Button (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Senior midfielder Mike DeBottis (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) capped the scoring in the half with 3:34 left off a pass from freshman attackman Alex O'Brien (Hanson, Mass./Boston College High).

Le Moyne scored three times over the opening five and one-half minutes of the third quarter for its first 12-goal lead of the game. Kelly tallied the first goal of the quarter with 13:05 left after taking a pass from junior midfielder Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool). Button netted the next two goals, 75 seconds apart. The first came off a feed from Kelly with 10:45 remaining, while the second was after taking a pass from senior midfielder Bryan Lawson (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst).

Mike Balla ended Le Moyne's six-goal run with an unassisted marker with 20 seconds left in the quarter.

Sophomore attackman Pat Nowak (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) ended the game's scoring after causing a turnover and sending a pass to Kline, who returned the ball to Nowak for his first goal of the year with 2:03 left in the game.
