Saints Start Fast, Sprint by Saint Leo

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Eleven goals in the first 13 fueled an offensive outburst by No. 3 Limestone (15-0, 6-0 CC) as they earned an 18-8 victory over a battle-tested Saint Leo (8-7) squad on Thursday, April 17.

Senior attack Katie Farrell (Brooks, Ga.) drove home another five goals to run her season total to a whopping 63, a number that is just nine shy of breaking the program's single season record of 71, and added an assist, six groundballs, five draw controls and a caused turnover.

She was joined by her offensive equal, only from the assist side, as senior attack Sarah Oor (Uxbridge, Canada) notched four more assists along with a pair of scores, four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Freshman attack Jaylen Schulte (Edgewater, Md.) added two scores and two assists while sophomore midfielder Taylor Cline (Hagerstown, Md.) finished with two goals, an assist and four groundballs.

Junior midfielder Jessica Aguanno (Delray Beach, Fla.), junior midfielder Sam McCarrick (Oswego, N.Y.) and senior attack Kacie Harris (Stanley, N.Y.) each added a pair of scores to wrap up the brunt of the offensive production. Defensively, senior defender Jenelle Fortunato (Vestal, N.Y.) delivered a career-high five caused turnovers and senior defender Samantha Cock (Terra Cotta, Ontario, Canada) had a career game with bests of nine groundballs and nine draw contorls with four caused turnovers.

Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Teeter (Auburn, N.Y.) played 47:12, allowing seven goals and making three saves to pick up the win and move to a perfect 15-0 on the season.

The Saints scored the first four goals of the game as part of the opening 11-2 run to take firm control early on. The Lions would rally with back-to-back scores as part of a 3-1 stretch to cut it to 12-5 with 25:03 left in the game. That would be as close as they would get, however, as Limestone outscored them 6-3 down the stretch to lock up the 18-8 victory.

Allie Sheftall posted a goal, two assists, eight groundballs, seven draw controls and a caused turnover to lead Saint Leo while Kelsey Burns and Emily Pittenger each had a pair of scores. Alix Murray finished with a goal and an assist and Kaylyn Kearns played all 60 minutes in goal, allowing 18 goals and making 14 saves.

Limestone will now host the 2014 Conference Carolinas Tournament on April 25-26. They will return to action at 12:00 p.m. on April 25 against the winner of No. 4 seed Belmont Abbey and No. 5 seed Erskine.
