Sachs Guides Polar Bears Past Huskies

GORHAM, Maine - Senior tri-captain Betsy Sachs scored a game-high four goals and had five draw controls to lead the visiting Bowdoin Polar Bears to a 17-4 victory over the Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference lacrosse match Thursday afternoon at chilly Hannaford Field.

The Polar Bears won their third straight game to improve to 8-5 on the season. The Huskies dropped to 4-7 overall.

Senior tri-captain Jordan Smith added three goals, and juniors Dana White and Clare McLaughlin and rookie Annie Glenn scored two goals apiece. Senior attack Molly Popolizio spearheaded the Polar Bear attack dishing out five assists.

Junior goalie Isabel Sippel made four saves over the first 49 minutes to earn her eighth win of the season. Sophomore Ella Blanchon played the final 11 minutes and recorded one save. For USM, sophomore Anh Nguyen had two goals. Senior Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) stopped 10 shots in the USM cage.

The Polar Bears never trailed in the game scoring the first four goals. Smith scored 50 seconds into the contest. Sachs tallied two markers in over the next nine minutes to make it 3-0. White scored at 19:42 before USM answered with its only goal of the opening half by Nguyen. The Polar Bears added four more before the end of the half to make it 8-1 at the break.

USM twice trimmed the deficit to six in the second half on goals by LaPlante (8-2) and Nguyen (9-3) before the Polar Bears pulled away. The Polar Bears out scored the Huskies 8-1 over the final 24 minutes with Sachs and Glenn accounting for two each.

Bowdoin out shot USM 34-11 for the game and won the battle for possession corralling 16 of 22 draw controls. The Polar Bears were very efficient clearing the ball, being successful on 15 of 16 attempts.

The Polar Bears close out their regular season next Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Tufts University in a NESCAC match.
