Saint Vincent Hangs on to Edge W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Saint Vincent led 4-2 at halftime and hung on to defeat Washington & Jefferson 7-5 Thursday night in a rematch of the 2013 Presidents' Athletic Conference men's lacrosse championship match won by the Presidents.

The Bearcats (4-8) scored the first two goals of the game before Casey Smallwood got the Presidents (5-10) on the board at the 7:58 mark of the first quarter. With his 59th appearance in a W&J uniform, Smallwood tied Joseph Eck '13 for the W&J record for career games played.

The second quarter followed a similar path as SVC scored the first two goals of the period before Smallwood scored in the final minute to bring the Presidents to within 4-2.

After the teams traded goals in the third period, Saint Vincent took control with two goals during the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. Max Kroll's goal at the 11:11 mark cut the W&J deficit to 7-4, but W&J was held off the scoreboard for the next 10 minutes until Bryan Whipkey finally found the back of the net with 49 seconds left.

Whipkey and Smallwood paced the Presidents with two goals, while Jacob Succop made 11 saves between the pipes.

Nick Pensyl has two goals and one assist to lead Saint Vincent. Greg Gonzalez also made 11 saves in goal. Saint Vincent held a 22-20 shot advantage and used a 35-22 edge in ground balls.

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 17) - Saint Vincent never trailed in a 7-5 win over Washington & Jefferson in a Presidents' Athletic Conference championship re-match from last season at Alexandre Stadium.

With the win, the Bearcats improve to 4-8 this year and will clinch home-field advantage throughout the 2014 PAC tournament with a win at Thiel on Saturday, April 26. The Presidents fall to 5-10 this season.

Matt Mackey and Peter Hronis gave SVC a 2-0 lead with goals in the first six minutes of the game. W&J cut the margin in half with just under eight minutes remaining in the first quarter, but SVC held a 2-1 lead through 15 minutes.

Nick Pensyl score 54 seconds into the second quarter off a pass from Sean Kretovics to put SVC ahead 3-1 early in the period. Pensyl later assisted on Hronis' second goal of the game, which came mid-way through the quarter. W&J found the back of the net with under a minute remaining in the first half as SVC led 4-2 at the break.

Each team score a goal late in the third quarter as Bryce Pasquariello scored off an assist by Patrick Kenna with 1:25 left in the frame and W&J answered 23 seconds later to make it a 5-3 game.

SVC used a pair of early fourth quarter goals to build a four-goal lead. Pensyl recorded an unassisted tally 32 seconds into the period and Tim Oxenreiter added an insurance goal with 12:41 to play off of a Pasquariello assist. The Presidents scored with 11:11 to play to cut the SVC lead to 7-4, but a goal with 49 seconds left would be the remainder of the offense for W&J.

Thanks to a 9-5 advantage in the second quarter, SVC held a slim, 22-20, lead on shots in the contest. The Bearcats converted 12 of 13 clears, while W&J was successful on 15 of 19 attempts.

Pensyl led all players with three points, while Hronis and Pasquariello each added two points. Charlie Russo won 8 of 15 face-offs for the Bearcats and Hronis picked up a game-best seven ground balls.

Greg Gonzalez earned the win in goal, making 11 saves in the victory, four of which came in the second quarter.

Saint Vincent will return to the field on Wednesday, April 23 with a 4:00 p.m. Senior Day match-up against La Roche in Latrobe.
