Robert Morris Edges Saint Francis for Record 10th Win

LORETTO, Pa. April 18, 2014 Robert Morris defeated in-state rival Saint Francis U. on Friday afternoon, 13-11.

Twins Corey and Jessica Karwacki (Sparks, Md./Hereford) combined for nine of the 13 goals for Robert Morris (10-4, 4-1 NEC) in the victory. Along with her four goals, C. Karwacki also picked up an assists as she and her sister each led the Colonials with five points.

The victory gave RMU its 10th win of the season, establishing a new program record and surpassing the previous record of nine set by the 2009 squad. Goaltender Kaitlin Pentz (Sykesville, Md./Century) has been between the pipes for all ten victories which is also the program record for individual wins in a season as she surpassed Erica Webb who was in net for all nine victories in 2009.

RMU jumped out to a 2-0 advantage just over two minutes into the first half as the Colonials scored seven of the first eight goals and held a 7-1 lead just six minutes into the opening frame. Of those seven goals for Robert Morris, J. Karwacki recorded four of them while C. Karwacki contributed two tallies to the run and Kristin Yoviene (Easton, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) found the back of the net as well.

Saint Francis (4-10, 1-4 NEC) scored with ten minutes elapsed in the period, but RMU answered with the next three goals to take a 10-2 lead with ten minutes remaining in the first half. C. Karwacki completed her hat trick while Katie Breeze (Ellicott City, Md./Middletown) and Lauren Roberts (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each added a goal.

The opening half closed with a three-goal run for the Red Flash, closing the Colonial advantage to five goals, 10-5, with the first period in the books.

J. Karwacki opened the scoring in the second half, but Saint Francis responded with its second three-goal run that cut its deficit to three goals, 11-8, just 11 minutes into the final frame.

C. Karwacki put an end to the Red Flash run with her fourth of the game, but Saint Francis responded with 12 minutes left in regulation to remain within striking distance of the Colonials, 12-9.

Anne Spewak (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) picked up the final goal for RMU to make the score 13-9, but the Red Flash recorded a pair of goals in the final minutes to pull within two goals, 13-11.

With five goals in the victory, J. Karwacki becomes the second Colonial this season joining Brittany Byerly (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) who accomplished the feat against UC-Davis to find the back of the net five times.

Four of J. Karwacki's five goals came from free-position attempts, tying the program's single-game record that was set by Erin Mossop against Monmouth during the 2012 campaign.

With a goal in the first half, Yoviene inches ever-closer to 100 career points as she is now just three points shy of the milestone heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

With 11 draw controls against the Red Flash, J. Karwacki now has 180 draw controls this season which extends the NCAA single-season record and gives her 332 draw controls in less than two seasons at Robert Morris as she chases down the NCAA career record which is slightly over 400 draw controls.

After a three-game road trip, Robert Morris will return home to close out the regular season with a two-game home stand. The Colonials will put their perfect 6-0 record at home on the line when they face Wagner on Friday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m.
