Belles Outlast Thunder in Double Overtime

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Aubrey Golembieski scored 1:57 into the second overtime period to lift the Saint Mary's lacrosse team to a 9-8 win over Trine for their first MIAA victory of program history on Friday afternoon.

The visiting Thunder turned their first possession into a goal with the first score of the game 54 seconds into play. The Belles tied the game as Tess Guerrero found an open Lauren Telford for a goal in the fourth minute of play.

Trine countered with a free position goal four-and-a-half minutes later to regain a 2-1 advantage. The score remained unchanged until the final minute. The Thunder took what proved to be their largest lead of the game with another free position goal with just 22 seconds remaining before the half.

That was more than enough time for the Belles to get a goal back. Aubrey Golembieski won the draw control, passed the ball off to Emilie Vanneste. Vanneste was fouled with four seconds remaining and connected with Golembieski on the restart as Golembieski netted a goal with two seconds on the clock to make it a 3-2 game at the half.

The scoring continued for the Belles in the second half as Saint Mary's notched the next four goals of the game to overtake the lead and gain a 6-3 advantage with 7:24 left on the clock. Jackie Loesch had a free position goal three minutes into the second half, and Sarah Neeser added a free position goal of her own nine minutes later. Aubrey Golembieski had her second goal of the contest with an unassisted effort midway through the half. Jackie Loesch tallied her second goal of the game with more than seven minutes remaining in regulation.

The Thunder made a late push over the final five minutes to force a tie to force the game into overtime with a 6-6 score.

Tess Guerrero converted a free position attempt 1:14 into the first overtime to give Saint Mary's a 7-6 lead. Trine, however, came back with a free position goal and a goal on the follow up play to a free position attempt to pull ahead 8-7. The Thunder appeared to have a chance to kill the clock late, but a pass attempt behind the goal line extended with less than two minutes left went out of bounds to give the ball back to the Belles.

On the ensuing possession, Aubrey Golembieski completed her fifth hat trick of the season with a free position goal with 1:10 remaining in the first overtime period to tie the game at 8-8. The Thunder had a free position attempt with 29 seconds left and the opportunity to take a late lead, but Stephanie Szymas had other things in mind by registering a huge save in goal to keep the game alive.

With the sudden-victory rule in effect in the second overtime period, Trine had another look at claiming the win with their 13th free position shot of the game a minute into the period. The shot bounced off the post and away where Shannon Weyer was able to collect the ground ball. Weyer carried the ball into the offensive zone. A few seconds later, Aubrey Golembieski found some space along the left side of the field inside the eight-meter zone and sent home the game winner 1:57 into the period.

Stephanie Szymas had her fourth double-digit save effort with 11 stops in goal. Aubrey Golembieski led the Belles with four goals and shared team-high honors with four draw controls. Jackie Loesch had two goals on the day. Sarah Neeser added a goal, five ground balls, and four draw controls. Tess Guerrero tallied a goal and an assist, and Lauren Telford chipped in a goal for the Belles while Emilie Vanneste added an assist. Shannon Weyer and Cathy Baxter joined Neeser with a team-high five ground balls.

The Belles (2-10, 1-4 MIAA) travel to Calvin for a league contest against the Knights on Tuesday, April 22 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
