Herons Hold off Rochester in Liberty Battle

William Smith junior Katie Sipple produced six points on a goal and five assists and sophomore Hannah Connolly notched four goals and added an assist as the Herons held off Rochester for an 11-9 Liberty League victory at Edwin Fauver Stadium in Rochester, N.Y., this afternoon.

William Smith improves to 6-7 overall and 6-1 in the Liberty League. The Yellowjackets are now 5-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Sophomores Geneva Calder and Emy Stratton each added two goals for the Herons. Calder added four ground balls. Sophomore Kate Byrne notched a goal and an assist and picked up four ground balls. First-years Amy Blanchard and Allie Flaherty each scooped up a game-high five ground balls.

Flaherty also earned an assist. Junior Rachel Hughes caused three turnovers and added two ground balls and an assist. First-year Jackie Rogers tallied three caused turnovers. Sophomore Meg Hannan scored a goal, won two draws and logged two ground balls. First-year Sarah Honan played all 60 minutes in goal and made eight saves.

Jamie Wallisch led Rochester with three goals and an assist for four points. Mara Karpp notched two goals and an assist. Lauren Basil added two goals. Cassie Mahar and Sarah Skinner each scored a goal for the Yellowjackets. Elisabeth Watson and Kathryn Maisch each recorded a team-high four ground balls. Watson also won a game-high 10 draws. Maire Prosak played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves.

Calder put William Smith up 1-0 just 33 seconds into the game. Basil tied things up for Rochester 4:01 in. Connolly tallied back-to-back goals to give the Herons a 3-1 advantage just under 10 minutes into the game. Mahar logged an unassisted tally for the Yellowjackets with 18:11 on the clock. William Smith then put together a 5-0 run to build an 8-2 lead. Stratton scored twice in the run and both Sipple and Connolly earned a goal and an assist. Wallisch found the back of the net for Rochester with 1:51 left in the first to make it 8-3 at halftime.

Hannan chipped in her fifth goal of the season 6:35 into the second half to stretch the Heron lead to six. The Yellowjackets then scored the next three goals to cut their deficit to three. Karpp logged back-to-back tallies and Basil scored with 17:14 on the clock.

Byrne answered for William Smith to make it 10-6 with 14:45 remaining. Wallisch added her second of the day at 7:33, but Connolly scored off a feed from Sipple with 4:48 on the clock to give William Smith an 11-7 lead. Rochester did not go away quietly, Wallisch and Skinner each found the back of the net in the final minutes to make it 11-9, but it proved to be as close as the Yellowjackets could get.

Each team finished with 22 shots. The Herons held a slight 29-28 lead in ground balls. The Yellowjackets dominated at the draw circle, winning 16 out of 22 draws. William Smith was successful on 13 of 15 clear attempts, while Rochester finished 11-of 14.

The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, April 19, when they travel to play another Liberty League game at RIT at 2:00 p.m.
