Mount St. Mary's Grounds Seahawks on Senior Day

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 19, 2014)--Mount St. Mary's defeated Wagner, 9-5, on Senior Day at Waldron Family Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Junior Mark Hojnoski led the Mount with three goals and two assists in the win.

Senior Bryden Pelletier started the scoring just 1:36 into the game to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. Fellow senior Kyle McDonough picked up an assist on the goal. After Wagner evened the score on a Patrick McMenamin goal, the Mount scored the next three goals to stretch the lead to 4-1.

McDonough scored with 5:08 left in the first quarter to give the Mount (1-14, 1-4 NEC) a 2-1 lead, and he added an extra-man goal 14 seconds into the second quarter to make it 3-1. Hojnoski's first goal of the game pushed the lead to 4-1 with 13:58 left in the opening half. Wagner's Billy Battaglia stopped the Mount scoring run, but Mike Pascali's goal with 19 seconds left in the half gave the Mount a 5-2 advantage.

McMenamin scored 1:20 into the second half to cut the Mount lead to 5-3, but Hojnoski answered just 14 seconds later, converting a Pascali pass for his second goal of the game. Evan Gormley's unassisted goal with 11:07 left in the third pushed the lead to 7-3.

Hojnoski and Bubba Johnson scored 18 seconds apart early in the fourth quarter to give the Mount a 9-3 lead. Wagner scored the final two goals of the game for the final score of 9-5.

Hojnoski's five-point game was a career high while Pascali finished with a goal and three assists for a four-point day. McDonough added two goals and an assist for the Mount as well.

Senior Chris Klaiber had a terrific performance on Senior Day, making 15 saves in the win. Mike Celmer dominated on face-offs for the Mount as well, winning 14 of 15 in the game, collecting a game-high nine ground balls in the process. Nicholas Gibaldi made 14 saves for Wagner (2-10, 0-5 NEC).

The Mountaineers outshot Wagner, 39-29, in the game while holding a 38-26 advantage in ground balls.

Mount St. Mary's closes out the 2014 season with a 1:00 p.m. game at Sacred Heart on Saturday, April 26.

Game Notes: The Mount honored seniors Mike Daly, Chris Klaiber, Kyle McDonough, Greg Mulvaney, Bryden Pelletier, Shane Pierce and Brett Shukri...The Mount is now 14-0 all-time against Wagner.

Emmitsburg, MD Wagner received two goals and one assist from redshirt freshman Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and sophomore Billy Battaglia (Madison, NJ/Madison) but Mount St. Mary's parlayed a 14-1 advantage in faceoffs en route to a 9-5 NEC victory today at sun-splashed Waldron Family Stadium.

Mount's Mark Hojnoski led all scorers with five points on three goals and two assists while Kyle McDonough added two goals and one assist. Mike Kelmer had the hot hand in the faceoff circle for the Mount, as took all 15 faceoffs, winning 14. Goalie Chris Klaiber came up with 15 saves in posting the win for the Mountaineers.

With his three-point outing, Patrick McMenamin assumes the Seahawk team leader in points with 28. The 5-6, 160-pound midfielder also leads the Seahawks in goals (16) and assists (12). For Battaglia, today's three-point outing came on the heels of a career-high four-point effort on April 15 at Sacred Heart, when he dished out a career-high three assists to go with one goal. Buoyed by his combined three goals and four assists in his last two contests, Battaglia is now up to five goals and eight assists on the season, with those 13 points ranking him fourth on the team in scoring.
