No. 2 Red Dragons Soar Past New Paltz

CORTLAND, N.Y. Fourteen players scored at least one point as the second-ranked Cortland lacrosse team improved to 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the SUNYAC with a 22-5 win versus New Paltz Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Stadium Complex.

Senior Taylor Reh (Miller Place) and sophomore Elizabeth LaComb (Syracuse/West Genesee) led the Red Dragon offense with three goals each. LaComb's goals were the first of her Cortland career. Sophomore Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) recorded a game-high five points on two goals and three assists, freshman Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) had two goals and two assists, senior Liz Beville (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) contributed two goals and an assist and senior Taylor Robinson (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) and juniors Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) each netted two goals.

Sophomores Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) and Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) and freshman Ally McNerney (Tully) recorded one goal and two assists apiece with McNerney's goal being the first of her career. Sophomore Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) added one goal and one assist and junior Angie Rudy (Palmyra/Palmyra-Macedon) and sophomore Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each chipped in with an assist.

Sophomore Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) started in goal for the Red Dragons, making three saves in 40 minutes, 11 seconds before giving way to freshman Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh), who stopped two shots in the final 19:49. Ohberg and junior Chelsea Martin (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) led Cortland with four draws apiece, Reh had a team-high four ground balls and junior Melissa Halstead (Miller Place) caused two turnovers.

Juniors Kelsey Healy (Central Islip/Bay Shore) and Lianne Valdivia (Kingston) paced New Paltz (4-7, 1-5 SUNYAC) with two goals each. Junior Carissa Citro (Miller Place) netted a goal and senior Talia Tesler (Rochester/Brighton) contributed an assist.

Junior goalie Jackie Ulanoff (Northport) registered seven saves for the Hawks. Citro collected a game-high five ground balls, and senior Maggie Rose Melito (Babylon) had four. Valdivia secured a game-high seven draws, and junior Julia Johnson (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) caused three turnovers.

Cortland opened up a 5-0 lead in the first 10:25 of the game as Reh scored twice and Ohberg picked up a goal and two assists. Citro put New Paltz on the scoreboard at 17:24 before the Red Dragons pushed the lead to 9-1 with a four-goal spurt capped by back-to-back goals from Beville. Healy made it a 9-2 game with her first of the contest at 9:23, but Cortland closed the half on a four-goal run for a 13-2 advantage at the break.

Four different players found the back of the net for the Red Dragons to open the second half as the lead grew to 17-2 at the 24:45 mark. Healy and Valdivia tallied back-to-back goals at 22:22 and 20:30, but Cortland closed the game by scoring five of the final six goals for the 22-5 final as every Red Dragon who dressed saw action.

Beville, Reh, Robinson, Kerry Bretti (Katonah/Fox Lane), Heather Casey (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) were honored prior to the game. Cortland hosts top-ranked and defending Div. III national champion Salisbury on Sunday at noon.
