Colorado College Drops Close Battle to Cabrini

RADNOR, Pa. Senior attacker Madeline Scherer struck for four goals to break Colorado College's single-season record, but the Tigers dropped a 14-12 decision at Cabrini on Saturday afternoon.

Scherer now has 59 tallies, one more than All-American Cassie Abel scored in 2004. She also climbed into fourth place on the single-season points list with 71 and has at least two more games to try to get closer to Mary Everett's mark of 84 set in 1999.

At the other end of the field, Melissa Scanzano scored six times to help the Cavaliers recover from an early 4-0 deficit.

Freshman midfielder Sadie Cole struck for three goals during the first half to help the Tigers build an 8-4 lead after 30 minutes.

Cabrini caught fire after Caitlyn Poole scored a man-up goal 2:57 into the second half to ignite an 8-0 run. Scanzano found the net four times in a span of 2:16 to give the Cavaliers an 11-8 lead and Suz Gennaro added another man-up tally with 16:54 left to make it 12-8.

CC cut its deficit to 12-10 on a pair of Scherer tallies, but Cabrini answered with two of its own to restore its four-goal cushion with 2:50 to play.

Madeline Pitkin struck for two of her four markers during the final 34 seconds, but Colorado College saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.

The Tigers finished with a 33-28 edge in ground balls while the teams launched 33 shots apiece.

First-year goaltender Maddie Pillari steered aside six shots for CC, which slipped to 13-4.

Freshman midfielder Mary Taussig led the Tigers with seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, while Cole grabbed six ground balls and four draw controls.

Janel Folkomer made seven of her 11 saves in the second half for the Cavaliers, who improved to 10-4.

Colorado College plays host to Division II Regis University on Thursday night.
