Wesley Rallies to Win Season Finale at Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. It was a tale of two halves as Wesley rallied from a six-goal deficit to defeat Southern Virginia, 12-9, in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines concluded their season at 5-9, while the Knights finish at 1-12.

Trailing, 8-3 at the half, Wesley scored three quick goals as Jorden Lutz, Alyse Obermeyer and Kirsten Ward all found the back of the net on free position shots, cutting the score to 8-6 with 24:30 left to play.

Southern Virginia responded with a goal with 20:47 left to play but Kaylee Miller answered for the Wolverines on a pass from Rylee Gould to make the deficit two goals once again with 17:58 remaining. Lutz followed with a score nearly three minutes later and Kaitlin Brennan capitalized on a man-down free position shot to tie the score with 13:35 remaining.

With just under 12 minutes left, Lutz added a free position goal to give Wesley its first lead of the game and Gould added a pair of insurance goals one on the free position and another off an assist from Lutz to seal the victory.

Lutz finished with a team-high five points in her final collegiate game while also leading the squad with five draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Gould (2g, 1a) and Ward (2g) also had multi-point efforts.

Brennan and Jessica Giaccone both controlled three draws while Katherine Cooke made 12 saves in the victory.

After being outshot, 25-10 in the first half, the Wolverines held a 22-9 shot advantage in the second period. Wesley won the battle of the draw controls, 15-7.
