Hoyas Can't Hold off Late Marquette Surge, Lose in OT

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Georgetown (4-9, 1-4 Big East) fell in overtime, 11-10, to Marquette (6-8, 4-1 Big East) on Saturday afternoon at Hart Park. The Hoyas led by as many as six goals midway through the third quarter but were unable to hold off a late surge by the Golden Eagles, who forced overtime then scored the overtime game-winner 54 seconds into the final period.

The Hoyas controlled play through much of the first three quarters, holding a 9-3 lead midway through the third quarter. Momentum shifted, as Marquette went on a 7-1 run to end regulation, forcing overtime. Marquette won the opening face-off and Ryan McNamara scored the game-winner. The loss eliminates the Hoyas from Big East Championship contention.

Junior attack Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) scored three goals and had one assist to lead the offense, while graduate student Tyler Knarr (Eagleville, Pa./LaSalle College) won 16 of 25 face-offs and picked up 13 ground balls. Redshirt junior Jake Haley (Grasonville, Md./Queen Anne's County) takes the loss, making eight saves and allowing 10 goals.

After a game-opening Marquette goal, Georgetown responded with a 5-0 run over the next 10 minutes. Junior attack Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) scored two of the first three goals, with Stafford adding one goal and an assist during the stretch. Freshmen midfielders Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) and Eduardo White (Littleton, Colo./Kent Denver) scored three minutes apart late in the first quarter to give GU a 5-1 lead.

Marquette's Tyler Melnyk scored a man-up goal with 1:58 remaining in the opening quarter to end Georgetown's run, making the score 5-2 at the end of the first.

Junior midfielder Mitch Hugdahl (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) extended the Hoyas' lead to four goals after finishing on a feed from sophomore midfielder Corey Parke (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) with 10:24 remaining in the first half.

Senior attack Jeff Fountain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./St. Paul's) answered Marquette's third goal by converting the Hoyas' extra-man opportunity on a pass from freshman midfielder Peter Conley (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) to give GU a 7-3 lead with 3:41 left in the half.

The Hoyas continued to roll after halftime as Parke picked up a rebound in front of the cage and scored at the 8:55 mark in the third quarter. Stafford scored 19 seconds later on an assist from Knarr to give GU a 9-3 lead.

Marquette rallied, scoring three goals during the last 4:50 of the third quarter to close within three goals. The Golden Eagles kept the momentum in the fourth quarter, as Melnyk scored to bring Marquette within two goals, at 9-7.

Stafford scored his third goal of the day with 11:54 on the clock to briefly extend Georgetown's lead by three. Marquette answered 10 seconds later to close back within two goals, making the score 10-8. Melnyk scored the next two goals to tie the score at 10 with 4:17 left in the fourth quarter.

Georgetown hosts Rutgers on Saturday, April 26 for Senior Day at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoyas will honor each of its eight seniors during a pre-game ceremony.
