Hartwick Men's Lacrosse Felled by No. 11 Ithaca

ONEONTA, NY- Hartwick found itself in a hole early that it could not recover from as the Hawks were downed by #11 Ithaca 19-7 on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. It was 'Wick's final home game of the season and also Senior Day.

The Bombers got out to a 3-0 lead within the first two minutes of the first quarter. 'Wick would get on the board at 10:25 on Cody Petillo's (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) 12th goal of the season to make it a 3-1 contest. IC then scored four straight times to move ahead 7-1 with 2:16 showing on the game clock in the period. The Hawks tacked on the last goal of the frame on a Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) to Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset) connection.

Ithaca increased its advantage in the second quarter to 12-2 at the 3:06 mark. The Hawks would end the stanza with a goal from Gropper to trail 12-3 at the break.

The third period saw just three goals be scored with only two coming from the visiting team. Hartwick scored once at 8:35 when Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) fed to Sean Brown (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville).

Gropper would score his team-leading 24th goal to begin the fourth quarter and make the game 14-5 in favor of the Bombers. That would be as close as 'Wick could get as Ithaca scored five straight times to increase its lead to 19-5 with 5:33 showing on the clock. The Hawks ended the game scoring the last two goals with one coming from Adam Goss (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and the other from Evan Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North).

Gropper scored three times to lead Hartwick and also had a team-high four ground balls. Brown, Cody Petillo, Evan Petillo, and Goss all scored once. Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) stopped 16 shots in the cage.

The Bombers got three goals from Pat Slawta, Jake Long, Ryan Burns, Andrew Kristy, and Justin Bird all tallied a pair of scores. James Manilla, John Januszkiewicz, Michael Walker, Joe Perkins, Steve Danylyshyn, Brandon Henne, Sean Ferrito and Forrest Rall scored one time each. Manilla and Slawta also had three helpers while Januszkiewicz and Michael Walker dished out two assists. Goalie Scott Sidnam won his 11th game of the season and came up with seven saves. Jack Deragon and Justin Isaacs played a total the last 5:33 of the game.

Ithaca led in shots, 55-26, and in ground balls, 44-22. The Bombers won 19 face-offs to 10 for the Hawks and were good on 15 of 16 clears to 'Wick's 11 of 20.

Prior to today's game, Hartwick acknowledged its nine seniors playing in their final home game. They are Vaglica, Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North), Brandon Manfredo (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman), Sean Kelly (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield), Xavier Clair (Walden, NY/Valley Central), Gropper, Tucker Bradley (Hingham, MA/Hingham), Rocky Dinga (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Park), and Shane Latsko (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow).

The Hawks head on the road for a non-conference game with Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
