Keene State Storms Past Southern Maine

KEENE, N.H. -- Twelve Keene State players registered a goal or an assist Saturday for the Owls on the way to an 18-2 lacrosse victory over the visiting Southern Maine Huskies at Owl Athletic Complex.

The win was the fifth straight for the Owls, and levels their overall record at 6-6. The league-leading Owls are unbeaten in LEC play at 5-0. The Huskies dropped their fifth straight game to slip to 2-11 overall and remain winless in five LEC contests.

Freshman Rob Hart (Londonderry, N.H.) led the way for Keene State with five goals, while classmate Tyler Reilly (Grafton, Mass.) had four goals. Reilly was also one of four Owls to register a pair of assists.

Freshman Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and junior Burleigh Desjardins (Brunswick, Maine) were the only Huskies to find the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) did everything he could in the cage making a career-high 21 saves for Southern Maine.

The Huskies' defense was strong throughout the first quarter, limiting the Owls to just two goals in the first 14:42. The Owls, though, were able to produce two quick scores in the final 18 seconds to bring the score to 4-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a different story for the Owls. Before a goal by Wing with 39 seconds remaining in the half, the Owls scored nine unanswered goals, including three on the man-up.

The Huskies tacked on a goal by Desjardins with 9:18 left in the third quarter for the first goal of the second half, but it would be the Huskies last goal of the game as the Owls would go on a 5-0 run from there to close it out.

Juniors Brooks Billingham (Plymouth, Mass./Martha's Vineyard Regional) and Ryan Hart (Richmond, N.H./Monadnock), and rookie Bryan Rotatori (Grafton, Mass.) each had a pair of goals for the Owls.

The Owls were dominant on defense, forcing Southern Maine into 25 turnovers while scooping up 19 ground balls. The Owls were also a perfect 24 for 24 on clear attempts.

Southern Maine returns home to host the University of Massachusetts Boston in an LEC game on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.). Keene State hits the road to take on Plymouth State University Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
