McLaughlin Saves 19 as Kutztown Downs SRU

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Senior goalie JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) recorded 19 saves in a back-and-forth affair to lead Kutztown to a 7-6 victory over Slippery Rock on Saturday in a PSAC match at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Junior Jill Spencer notched four goals, including a perfect 3 for 3 on free position attempts, to push the Golden Bears (4-10, 2-8 PSAC) to their second conference win on the season. Today's accomplishment marks the first time that KU has reached the two-win mark in the PSAC. Spencer leads the squad with 31 goals on the season.

McLaughlin came up huge in today's victory, considering Slippery Rock (6-9, 3-7 PSAC) outshot the Golden Bears 34-12. McLaughlin recorded 19 saves on 25 shots-on-goal, one short of her career high.

Taylor Sandin (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) put KU on the attack early, recording the first goal of the game in 25 seconds of play. SRU countered back quickly, scoring 32 seconds later. The two teams traded blows until a 4-4 tie heading into halftime.

Devan Davis (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and Spencer pushed KU ahead to a 6-4 lead early in the second. The Rock responded immediately, but Spencer tallied her fourth goal of the game with 16:12 remaining to regain the two-goal cushion. Slippery Rock knocked in one more with under five minutes to play, but could not find the equalizer.

Morgan Bright (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) scored her 17th of the season in the first half off of a pass from Kelsey Halligan (Havertown, PA/Haverford).

The two squads combined for 45 turnovers and 50 fouls, far from ideal. SRU held a 12-3 advantage on draw controls.

Kutztown will wrap up its three-game road stretch with a PSAC match-up at Lock Haven University on Wednesday, April 23 at 4:00 p.m.
