Hartford Tops Vermont in America East Play

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Andrew Buckanavage and Ian MacKay tallied three goals each, but Vermont fell to Hartford 11-7 in America East men's lacrosse action Saturday night at Al Marzook Field.

MacKay led the Catamounts with four points on three goals and an assist, while Buckanavage also chipped in with three scores. Greg Reynolds tallied a pair of goals and one assist, and nine other Hawks added a goal apiece to propel Hartford.

Justin Rosenberg made 10 saves in goal for Vermont, while Frank Piechota stopped 13 shots to earn the win for Hartford.

Ty Schuldt of Hartford netted the game's first goal before Buckanavage and MacKay registered tallies to give Vermont a 2-1 advantage. MacKay's goal came on a man-up opportunity, with Patrick Clark picking up the assist on the play. Vermont took a one-goal advantage into the second period.

After the teams traded a pair of goals to begin the quarter, Hartford tallied three in a row in a span of four minutes to take a 5-3 lead at the 3:11 mark of the second stanza. Buckanavage netted his second score of the game just under a minute later, but Greg Reynolds answered back for Hartford to give the Hawks a 6-4 lead heading into halftime.

The Hawks outscored Vermont 3-0 in the third quarter behind goals from three different scorers. Hartford took a 9-4 advantage into the final quarter of play.

Vermont (5-7, 0-4 AE) registered two of the first three goals of the fourth period to cut its deficit to 10-6 with 11:48 remaining. Graham Horvath tallied his first score of the game and Buckanavage followed just under a minute later with his second of the contest to bring UVM back within striking distance.

Hartford (6-8, 1-3 AE) added to its lead when Kevin O'Shea scored a man-down goal with 4:32 remaining. MacKay answered for UVM with a score off a feed from Nick Bartlett with just 26 seconds showing on the clock, but Vermont ran out of time and eventually fell by a score of 11-7.

The Catamounts return to action for their regular season finale against UMBC on Saturday (April 26) at 1:30 p.m. Vermont seniors will be honored with a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day prior to the contest.
