Dominican Completes Season Sweep of NDNU

BELMONT, Calif. - Kevin Powers had a career day and Dominican blew out Notre Dame de Namur University 23-6 in the teams' second Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association meeting of the season.

The Penguins improved to 8-3 on the season and 4-1 in WILA play while the Argos fell to 1-7 and winless at 0-5 in WILA play. Since 2011, Dominican has won seven of the last 11 matches against NDNU.

Powers scored four goals and dished out a career-high six assists en route to matching a career-high 10 points. Powers scored the game's first goal less than a minute into action. Though the game was tied 4-4 at the first quarter, Dominican would establish a commanding 11-5 lead by halftime. From there, the Penguins scored the final nine goals of the game and held NDNU scoreless for the final 23 minutes. Once the dust had settled, the Penguins outshot the Argos 51-20

Blake Crossman helped the Penguins earn possession with 11 successful faceoffs. Colin McMahon won all three of his faceoffs. When the ball was loose, Dominican was there - the Penguins scooped up 34 ground balls, twice as many as the Argos.

Sean Donohue allowed four goals and made two saves. Reis Stanley played the remainder of the game and also made two saves while allowing two goals to pick up his fourth win of the season to move to 4-1.

Cody Bernstein added a hat trick and a pair of assists. Jake Bernstein, Kiel Crowley-Gavlin, and Dyan Acevedo each netted a pair of goals. Seven others all scored as well while 13 total players recorded a point. Powers leads the team in goals (31, a career-best) and assists (15) for 46 points on the season.

The Penguins will have their much-anticipated rematch with Colorado Mesa University on Sunday, April 27 at 12:00 p.m. that will decide who takes home the 2014 WILA banner. Dominican will look to avenge a 9-8 upset that gave CMU sole possesion of first place. The Penguins will need to win by two or more goals to capture the WILA title for a second consecutive season. That is also Senior Day, where the team's seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
