Top-Ranked Red Dragons Pummel Potsdam

CORTLAND, N.Y. Junior Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) tallied a career-high eight points on a career-best four goals and four assists to lead the top-ranked Cortland lacrosse team to an 18-5 victory versus Potsdam Tuesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 16-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference, while the Bears fell to 4-10 and 0-7.

Freshman Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) added three goals for Cortland. Senior Taylor Reh (Miller Place) recorded two goals and two assists, junior Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) had two goals and one assist and sophomore Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored twice.

Sophomore Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) registered one goal and two assists with her goal making her the 24th player in program history to reach 100 in her career. Junior Chelsea Martin (Ogdensburg/Ogdensburg Free Academy) contributed one goal and one assist, and sophomores Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland), Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) and Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) each netted a goal.

Sophomore Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) started in goal for the Red Dragons, making one save in 45 minutes, 35 seconds. Freshman Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) stopped one shot over the final 16:25. Farrell recorded a game-high four ground balls, Gentile won three draws and Ohberg and senior Liz Beville (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) caused two turnovers apiece.

Sophomore Bri McClusky (Watertown/Immaculate Heart) and freshman Michaela Cole (Parishville/Parishville-Hopkinton) paced the Bears with two goals each. Freshman Hannah Keggins (Watertown) netted a goal and junior Bailey Weigel (East Amherst/Williamsville East) chipped in with two assists.

Senior Jen Chmiel (Rochester/Eastridge) played the first half in goal for Potsdam, turning aside three shots. Freshman Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua) registered three saves in the second half. Weigel also contributed team highs of five draw controls and two caused turnovers.

The Red Dragons wasted little time in taking control of the game, building a 5-0 lead less than four minutes into the game as Farrell had a hand in every goal. The lead increased to 11-0 at the 8:20 mark before Keggins put the Bears on the scoreboard with 2:37 on the clock, and Cortland took an 11-1 lead into the half.

Five different players each tallied a goal for Cortland to open scoring in the second half to make it a 16-1 game with 23:23 remaining. McClusky stopped the run with her first of the game at 21:25 before Farrell and Bennett notched back-to-back goals to give the Red Dragons an 18-2 lead. The Bears tallied the last three goals of the game, one from McClusky and two from the free position by Cole, for the 18-5 final.

CORTLAND, N.Y.-The top-ranked Cortland Red Dragons (16-0, 7-0 SUNYAC) used a strong start to down Potsdam (4-10, 0-7) 18-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) and sophomore attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) each scored twice for the Bears, while Marilyn Farrell led Cortland with a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists.

The Red Dragons opened the first half with the game's first 11 tallies, including three from Kristen Ohberg and two from Farrell. Freshman defender Hannah Keggins (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) got Potsdam on the board with the period's final goal at the 2:37 mark. Cortland scored five straight to start the final 30 minutes.
