Brown Knocks off No. 20 Bryant to Retain Ocean State Cup

Providence, R.I. - Brown opened a 9-2 lead at the half and held off a late Bryant challenge to earn a 13-11 win over the Bulldogs in a non-league game at Stevenson Field, capturing the Ocean State Cup for the second straight season in the battle of Rhode Island lacrosse supremacy.

Bears' freshman Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY) scored a career high five goals and handed out an assist to lead all scorers. Senior Sam Hurster (St. Louis, MO), freshman Matt Graham (Amityville, NY) and junior Tim Jacob (Palo Alto, CA) netted two goals each for Brown.

The game may have come down to a Titanic battle in the face-off x, where Brown's Tommy Capone (Watertown, NY) went up against the nation's top face-off man in Bryant's Kenny Massa. Just one year ago, Massa captured 15 of 18 face-offs against the Bears. Tonight, Capone was the difference in the game, battling throughout to capture 12 of 27 face-off attempts.

In goal for the Bears, senior Will Round (Mt. Lebanon, PA) made 10 saves while allowing 10 goals in 54 minutes of play. Sophomore Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) played the last six minutes in a relief role and made two saves, while allowing a late goal.

Shane Morrell led the Bulldogs with three goals and two assists, while Colin Dunster added two goals. Gunner Waldt made eight saves, while surrendering 13 goals in goal for Bryant.

With the scored tied, 1-1, Brown scored the next six goals, two to close out the opening quarter, and four straight to open the second quarter, to open up a 7-1 advantage. Graham, Hurster, junior Tyler Landis (Coppell, TX), and freshman Larkin Kemp (Greenwich, CT) scored one goal each in the spurt, while Molloy scored twice.

Bryant's Brett Baker scored to make the score 7-2, but Jacob added his first goal and Molloy scored with 31 seconds remaining to give the Bears a 9-2 advantage at intermission.

The Bulldogs got back in the game in the third quarter, cutting Brown's lead to 10-7 after a goal by Alex Zomerfeld with 1:30 remaining. But Graham scored his second goal of the game with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter to put the Bears back up by four goals, 11-7, heading into the final quarter.

With momentum in their favor, Bryant kept up the pressure and cut the Brown lead to two goals, 12-10 with 7:52 remaining.

Molloy responded and put the game out of reach with his fifth goal, scoring with 5:32 left to give the Bears a 13-10 advantage. A late goal by Bryant's Colin Dunster accounted for the final score.

Brown hosts Dartmouth at Stevenson Field in its final game of the season on April 26 at 2:00 pm, and will honor its eight seniors in pre-game ceremonies: Tommy Capone, Stephen Chmil, Sam Hurster, Daniel Mellynchuk, Philip Pierce, Will Round, Peter Vivonetto and Brady Williams.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. No. 20 Bryant team cut a 9-2 hole down to just two goals in the middle of the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome its largest deficit of the season, falling to intrastate rival Brown, 13-11, Tuesday night at Stevenson Field in the Ocean State Cup title bout.

The Bulldogs (11-4) got off to a slow start and found themselves in a 3-1 hole thanks to Brown (7-6) goals from Tim Jacob, Matt Graham and Sam Hurster, and the Bears more than doubled that lead less than three minutes into the second frame, 6-1.

Brown would extend that lead to 7-1, scoring four straight to open the second quarter, before the Bulldog attack finally got possession for an extra-man opportunity off a slashing call on Brendan Caputo. It took only seconds for rookie Brett Baker (Ridgefield, Conn.) to find the back of the net, assisted by sophomore Shane Morrell (Glen Mills, Pa.), making a dent in the Bears' six-goal advantage, but Brown would get it back less than five minutes later on the second score of the day from Jacob.
