UMass Boston Nips Southern Maine in Overtime

GORHAM Maine -- Junior John Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) scored with less than a second remaining in overtime to give the Beacons a thrilling 12-11, come-from-behind victory over the Southern Maine in LEC action Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Beacons and improved their record to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Huskies dropped their sixth straight to fall to 2-12 overall and remain winless in the conference.

The Beacons forced the game into overtime as sophomore Noah Ellis (Hingham, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation time. The goal capped a comeback from a two-goal deficit earlier in the fourth quarter.

Powers, Ellis, juniors Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) and Ryan McGoff (Charlestown, Mass./Winchester), and rookie Nick Tangherlini (Cohasset, Mass.) scored two goals apiece for the Beacons. Power also added an assist, and senior Dom Fichera (Scituate, Mass./BC High) had two assists. Sophomore goalie Craig Freehill (Norwell, Mass.) made 10 saves to earn the win, and rookie AJ Collette (West Springfield, Mass.) had one save in a brief appearance in the fourth quarter.

Rookie Jeff Urmston (Bellingham, Mass.) led the Huskies' offense scoring three times. Classmates Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and Tyler Jamison (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area), sophomore Austin Watts (Westbrook, Maine) and junior Burleigh Desjardins (Brunswick, Maine) each scored twice. Sophomore goalie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) stopped 15 shots, including two in the overtime period.

The Beacons outshot the Huskies 45-33, including 4-0 in the extra frame, and were successful on all 15 clear attempts. The Huskies had a 35-30 edge in ground balls and won 13 of 24 faceoffs.

Southern Maine concludes its regular season this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) traveling to Western Connecticut State University. UMass Boston will play a non-conference game at Regis College on Thursday (5:00 p.m.).
