Bearcats Win Senior Day Shootout with Redhawks

LATROBE (April 23) - The Bearcats scored a season-high 17 goals en route to a 17-12 win over La Roche on Senior Day at Chuck Noll Field. With the win, Saint Vincent improves to 5-8 on the season, while the Redhawks fall to 2-9.

La Roche opened the scoring with a goal 1:40 into play, but four-straight by the Bearcats closed the first quarter with SVC up 4-1. Peter Hronis and Tim Oxenreiter scored 38 seconds apart at 11:49 and 11:11 and Matt Mackey added a goal at 5:15 and Nick Pensyl capped the scoring with a score at the 33-second mark.

The Redhawks answered with three goals in the first 5:06 of the second quarter to tie the game, 4-4, but a pair of scores 41 seconds apart by Pensyl and Oxenreiter gave SVC the lead heading into halftime, 6-4.

A total of 19 goals were scored in the second half, including 11 in the third quarter. La Roche scored three of the first four goals in the period over the first 5:32, with a tally by Mackey the only Bearcat goal, as the score was tied 7-7 with 9:28 left in the third. SVC used goals at 7:55 and 7:23 to open a two-goal lead.

The Redhawks answered back with a pair of scores 32 seconds apart to tie the game at nine. Bryce Pasquariello scored the eventual game-winner at 2:03, as Pensyl assisted on his goals at 2:03 and 46 seconds. Mackey added a goal with 17 ticks left in the period and SVC led 12-9 through three quarters.

After an early La Roche goal in the fourth, Pasquariello scored back-to-back goals for SVC, 14-10. After a duo of La Roche goals, SVC scored three times (two by Pensyl) in the final 1:52 to post the 17-12 win.

Mackey (four goals, four assists) and Pensyl (five goals, three assists) led all players with eight points apiece. Pasquariello scored four goals and Oxenreiter added a pair of scores.

For the game, SVC led in shots, 50-41, behind a 15-4 advantage in the first quarter. Charlie Russo won 22 of 31 face-offs for SVC as the Bearcats won 23 of 33 draws in the game. Russo and Hronis picked up a game-high 10 ground balls each.

Logan Hoffmann earned the win in goal, making eight saves through three quarters. Greg Gonzalez made three saves in the final period, including an amazing stop on what seemed to be a wide-open net.

Saint Vincent travels to Thiel on Saturday, April 26 for a 1:00 p.m. contest that will determine seeding in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament. If the Bearcats win, they will be 3-0 against the rest of the league and will boast hosting rights for the semifinal and final rounds.
