Red Foxes Hold off Saints for One-Goal Victory

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. Allison Gionta scored the game-winning goal with 8:49 remaining as Marist held off Siena 10-9 in the Saints' final home game of 2014. Sophomore goalie Ashley Holdridge was outstanding, making 13 saves for the Saints.

With their 10th straight win, Marist (13-2, 7-0) clinches the No. 1 seed in next week's MAAC championships and at least a share of the regular season title.

The Red Foxes scored five times in the first 3:22 to race out to a 5-1 lead. But Siena (4-12, 2-5), which had previously been eliminated from MAAC Tournament contention, gave red-hot Marist all it could handle.

Following a timeout, the Saints responded with three straight goals and pulled within 7-6 at the half. Siena never trailed by two goals after Marist's early spurt in what proved to be a neck-and-neck affair the rest of the way.

Siena rallied to tie the game three times in the second half, with Julia Sirianni's second goal of the game knotting the score one final time at 9-9 with 12:22 remaining. But after Gionta converted the go-ahead free-position attempt shortly thereafter, the Red Foxes held possession for all but four seconds of the final 7:37 to hold on for the win.

Marist out-shot the Saints 30-16, but struggled to solve Holdridge who has either tied or set her career-high in saves in each of the past three games.

Erin Mossop led the Saints offensively with five points, dishing out a season-high four assists. Freshman Maddie Devine netted her second straight hat trick and classmate Cara McQuillan added two goals.

Gionta (hat trick) and Kirsten Viscount (three assists) both scored four points apiece for Marist which broke the program's single-season win total.

The Saints put a bow on their 2014 season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. match-up at Iona.
