Falcons Soar Past Trojans in Conf. Carolinas Semifinals

GAFFNEY, SC - Pfeiffer (13-3) advanced to the Conference Carolinas championship game with an 11-1 thrashing of Mount Olive (12-6) in the semifinal round. The win sets up a showdown with the top-seeded Limestone Saints who are ranked third nationally according to the IWLCA Coaches Poll. Pfeiffer currently sits in a tie for eighth place in the national poll.

The Falcons dominated from the opening whistle, scoring six unanswered goals and keeping the Trojans out of the scoring column in the first 30 minutes of play. Stephanie Athens got the scoring started 1:48 into the contest on an unassisted goal. Just over two minutes later, Kristi Korn scored on an assist from Chalane Morrison to give Pfeiffer a two-goal advantage.

At the 18:06 mark of the half, Sarah Daly scored on a free position attempt to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. Britton Muir went coast-to-coast at the 13:00 mark and then Daly tacked on Pfeiffer's fifth goal.

Ashleigh Kassab scored with one second remaining on the clock as Pfeiffer took a 6-0 lead into the break.

The defense continued to dominate in the second half and Gracie Herbert added her first score of the afternoon as Pfeiffer continued the attack. Athens and Daly each added a strike as the route continued.

Morrison's goal put Pfeiffer up 10 before Mount Olive scored for the first time in 50:49 of game action as Cassidy Wilson allowed her only goal of the contest.

Kayla Bedwell scored the 11th and final goal of the game at the 5:52 mark.

Wilson made 10 saves on the afternoon and grabbed a game-high six ground balls. Daly netted a hat trick and Katherine Athens added to her school record of ground balls in a career with four more.

Today's victory marked the 13th of the season for the Falcons which is the third highest total in school history.

The win sets up a rematch with the Saints as the two teams met in Misenheimer, NC on April 12. Pfeiffer held a five goal lead with 15 minutes to play but Limestone rallied for the game's final seven tallies to steal a 12-10 victory.

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Riann Daziel scored the lone goal for the University of Mount Olive as they fall in the semifinal round of the 2014 Conference Carolinas tournament 11-1 to the Pfeiffer Falcons in Gaffney, N.C. Hannah Knight led the team in groundballs with five.

Pfeiffer got in the goal first in semifinal match-up as Stephanie Athens struck the back of the net unassisted 28:12 into the first half. The goal sparked a 10-0 run by the Falcons that lasted until the 9:11 mark in the second half.

Mount Olive (12-6) did put a stop to the offence by Pfeiffer (13-3) as the Trojans held the Falcons without a goal for 12 minutes in the later end of the first half after a goal by Britton Muir with 13 minutes to play.

The Trojans got their first and only goal off the stick of Daziel with 9:11 left in the game.

Pfeiffer added one final goal in the game with 5:52 left as Kayla Bedwell scored an unassisted shot.

Katie McGovern came close to a goal as she had seven shots and of those five were on goal. She also had three groundballs and two draw controls. Daziel and Gina Fader were second on the team in the groundball statistic with four a piece. In goal for the Trojans, Knight had eight saves to go along with her five groundballs.

Mount Olive finishes the season 12-6 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas play. The Trojans placed five on the 2014 All-Conference Carolinas team in Katie McGovern, Riann Daziel, Gina Fader, Michelle Fortier, and Hannah Knight.
