Colonials Close Campaign with Loss at Michigan

Ann Arbor, Mich. April 26, 2014 Despite five goals from Robert Morris freshman JonPatrik Kealey (Ottawa, Ontario/South Carleton) the Colonials closed their 2014 lacrosse campaign this afternoon with a 19-10 loss to Michigan at Michigan Stadium.

Robert Morris (5-9, 2-4 NEC) fell behind 4-0 midway through the opening frame and would never recover.

Three of Kealey's goals came in the first quarter, giving the freshman the third hat trick of his career.

After Michigan (5-10, 1-3 ECAC) jumped out front with four goals, Kealey stopped the bleeding on a wrap-around from the left wing, gaining enough space thanks to a screen from behind the cage.

The freshman would add his second goal as he cut into the lane and beat the goaltender right in front of the crease.

After a Wolverine goal with 27.1 seconds remaining in the frame, Kealey completed the hat trick with almost an identical goal to his first. He picked the ball up from a shot that went out of bounds, then used a screen to get in position for another wrap-around from the left wing.

The Colonials would cut Michigan's lead to one to begin the second quarter. Sophomore Nicholas Beaudoin (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame College) won the face-off and sprinted downfield, firing a shot from the top of the arc for his first goal of the season.

The Wolverines would respond with seven unanswered goals to take a 12-4 lead into halftime.

RMU picked up the first two goals of the second half to cut Michigan's lead in half. Sophomore Luc Mangan (Pine Falls, Manitoba/The Hill Academy) tallied the first goal of his career when he fired a shot top-shelf past the Wolverine goaltender. Less than two minutes later, Kealey picked up a groundball and beat the Michigan defense with one-handed wrap-around.

Trailing 16-6 with 13:16 remaining in the game, redshirt senior Taylor Graves (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) got on the board after senior Sean Meagher (Chesterfield, Mo./St. Louis University) caused a turnover on the Colonial defensive end.

Kealey added his fifth goal of the contest with 6:14 left, while freshman Kento Nakano (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and redshirt sophomore Chris Barney (Cheshire, Conn./Bridgeton Academy) each added tallies in the final minute. Nakano's goal was the first of his career.

Senior Brian Bohn (Mars, Pa./Seneca Valley) became the third goaltender in school history to start every game for RMU in a season, joining Charles Ruppert (2011, 2013) and Sal Barcia (2009). Bohn made seven saves and allowed 12 goals before being replaced by junior Matt Bukovac (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods), who also stopped seven shots.

Meagher had four of the Colonials' 14 caused turnovers, finishing the season with 43 and his career with 98 both marks serving as program records.

Kealey's five-goal performance is only the fourth of its kind from a freshman in program history. Current sophomore Eric Rankel (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) holds the school rookie record with six goals against Quinnipiac last season in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament, while Kealey's effort ties him for second with Rankel (Feb. 16, 2013 vs. UMBC) and Trevor Moore (April 4, 2008 vs. Canisius).

Robert Morris finishes the season at 5-9 and will lose seven seniors to graduation.
