Bengals Down Bears in Season Finale

BUFFALO, N.Y.-Buffalo State (8-7, 3-5 SUNYAC) used a big first half to defeat the Potsdam lacrosse team (4-11, 0-8) 15-7 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore attack Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) led the Bears with two goals and an assist and junior attack Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) had a goal and two assists to go with six draw controls.

The Bengals scored the first two goals of the contest before Potsdam freshman attack Mariah Pierce (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) got the Bears on the board at 23:15 with an assist from Weigel. Buffalo State then turned up its offense and closed the half with a 9-0 run. Becca Martinez scored three times during the stretch.

Potsdam held its own in the second half, outscoring the Bengals 6-4. Just 1:50 into the final period, sophomore midfielder Brittany Blake (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) scored a man-up goal. After Buffalo State answered, the Bears scored three straight to close the gap to 12-5. McClusky scored at 23:58.

Freshman defender Hannah Keggins (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) struck at 16:15 and McClusky closed the run at 14:37 with Weigel's second assist. The Bengals Niki Paulhardt was the next to get on the board, but Potsdam freshman midfielder Alyssa Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) scored at 9:23 to make it 13-7. Martinez and Kendra Thomas got the Bengals final tallies of the day and McClusky set up Weigel with 1:57 remaining to close the scoring.

In goal, senior captain Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) made six saves, while Buffalo State's Colleen George stopped seven shots.

The Bears outshot the Bengals 28-25 and finished with a 25-16 advantage in ground balls.

The game brings to a close the careers of Chmiel and senior attack Michelle Varney (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams). Chmiel, a two-time team captain and SUNYAC goalie of the week, finishes with five wins and 247 saves. Varney, who was sidelined for the final three games of the season due to injury, scored 29 goals and recorded four assists and 21 ground balls in 26 games.
