Hartwick Drops Season Finale to Alfred

ALFRED, NY- Hartwick concluded its 2014 season against Empire 8 foe Alfred on Saturday afternoon. The host Saxons led 7-3 at the half and scored four straight times spanning the third and fourth quarters to come away with a 11-4 victory at Yunevich Stadium.

Seniors Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) and Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset) both scored a pair of goals in their final games as members of the Hawks. Fellow senior Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) and junior Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had one assist each.

Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) played 57 minutes in goal and came up with 11 saves. Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway) came in for the final three minutes and had one save.

The Saxons got four goals from Brendan Sullivan. Derek Bishop and Tanner Morse both had two goals each. Derek Green, Nicolas Wood, Caleb McCaig all had one score apiece. Morse led the team with two assists.

Cody O'Connor stopped seven shots in 57 minutes of game time. Tyler Bevor replaced him for the last three minute and did not record a save.

The game remained scoreless for over 10 and half minutes of the first quarter until AU struck first at 4:27 on Green's unassisted goal. The Saxons' lead was short-lived as Hartwick answered back four seconds later on the man-up opportunity by Vaglica to knot the contest up at 1-1. The Saxons tacked on two more goals to end the first frame ahead 3-1.

It was 4-1 Alfred at the 12:01 mark of the second stanza on Wood's score. 'Wick would halve it as Simmons assisted Gropper at 10:03. Three more AU goals spotted the home team a 7-2 advantage with just under five minutes remaining in the period. Gropper's second tally of the afternoon with 1:28 left on the clock got the Hawks to within four goals at halftime.

Both defenses stiffened in the third frame that saw only two goals scored. Unfortunately, both of them came from Alfred as the Saxons increased their lead to 9-3. In the final frame, AU scored once at 11:21 and again with three minutes remaining to take an 11-3 lead. The Hawks ended the Saxons' scoring spree as Vaglica scored his second goal of the day with 2:25 left to play.

Alfred led in shots, 43-27, and in ground balls, 30-25. Rourke and Fred Golini (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) both picked up three ground balls to lead the Hawks.
