Huskies Cruise Pass UMass Dartmouth

GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Jenna Cyr (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) and Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) scored five goals apiece as Southern Maine cruised to a 24-5 victory over Massachusetts Dartmouth in Little East Conference lacrosse action on Senior Day at Hannaford Field.

The win improved the Huskies' record to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in LEC play. The Corsairs dropped their fourth straight game to finish the season 4-12 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Cyr led all scorers with six points as she had an assist to go along with her five goals. She also had a game-high seven draw controls. Senior Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) added five points on two goals and three assists, and picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Senior Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) and rookie Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine) each contributed four points on a goal and three assists. Fifteen different USM players picked up a point in the game. Senior goalie Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) earned her sixth win of the season making six saves.

For the Corsairs, senior Taylor Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) had three goals, and rookie Catrina Long (Billerica, Mass.) scored twice. Rookie goalie Leah Wilkinson (Northford, Conn.) finished the game with seven saves. Corsano and sophomore Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) had six draw controls. Wilkinson and senior Vicky Wood (New Bedford, Mass.) each scooped up a team-high four ground balls.

The Huskies scored 12 unanswered goals in the opening 16 minutes to take command. Turcotte and Cyr each had three goals while Kelly and sophomore Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) scored twice in the run of USM goals. UMD never threatened to get back in the game.

Southern Maine out shot UMD 38-18 and had a 19-16 edge in ground balls. UMass Dartmouth had a 17-14 advantage on draw controls.

Prior to the start of the game, the Huskies honored their six departing seniors: defender Katie Grenier (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee), Vogel, Kelly, Cyr, Forster and Turcotte.

Southern Maine has a make-up game tomorrow (12:00 p.m.) at Rhode Island College. UMass Dartmouth has completed its season.
