Western Connecticut Downs Southern Maine

DANBURY, Conn. -- The Western Connecticut Colonials secured the fourth seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament by dispatching the visiting Southern Maine Huskies, 10-3, Saturday afternoon at the WAC (Western Athletic Complex).

The Colonials snapped a two-game losing skid with the victory and finished the regular season 7-9 overall, including a 4-3 mark in LEC play. The Colonials will host fifth-seeded Plymouth State University in a first round game of the LEC Tournament on Tuesday.

The Huskies dropped their seventh straight game to conclude the season 2-13 overall. The Huskies were winless in the conference.

Sophomores Nate Wilson (Norwich, Conn.) and Mike Garrett (Vernon, Conn.), and rookie Frankie Magrone (Bethel, Conn.) led the Colonials with two goals apiece. Wilson also contributed a pair of assists to finish with a game-high four points.

Junior goalie Kevin Seery (East Lyme, Conn.) had a strong game making 11 saves.

Southern Maine received goals from sophomore Austin Watts (Westbrook, Maine) and rookies Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and Tyler Jamison (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area).

Sophomore goalie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) had another big game stopping 19 shots. Jurgelevich finished the season with 224 saves, the third highest single-season total in the history of the program, and just four stops shy of the season record. Jurgelevich posted 10 or more saves in 14 games this season.

Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game as Jamison converted a feed from rookie Luke Johnas (North Bennington, Vt.) for his 15th goal of the season.

From that point, Western Connecticut scored the next six goals to take a 6-1 lead by the halftime intermission. Garrett equalized at the 5:00 mark, and gave the Colonials the lead for good with his second goal just under three minutes later.

In the second quarter, Wilson notched his pair of markers 38 seconds apart early in the period to increase the lead to 4-1. Magrone and sophomore Robert Morley (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) would add goals before the end of the quarter.

Sophomore John Foristall (Danbury, Conn.) made it seven straight WestConn goals four minutes into the third quarter. Wing scored a man-up goal for USM at 9:38 to break the string of Colonial goals, but Magrone scored late in the quarter to make it 8-2 after three periods.

Senior Ryan Foster (Ledyard, Conn.), the lone senior on the Western roster, and rookie Logan Yelle (Branford, Conn.) sandwiched the goal by Watts in the fourth quarter.
