Cardinals Win Close Non-Conference Battle with Lions

WHEELING, W.Va. Wheeling Jesuit celebrated senior day in style, taking a hard fought 10-8 non-conference lacrosse victory over Mars Hill on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

WJU improves to 10-2 on the season and will now travel to Mercyhurst for the ECAC playoffs at where they will face a tough rematch against Lake Erie College on May 2nd.

Senior Landon DelPrince made his final game on Bishop Schmitt Field count, leading all scorers with four goals to his name on nine shots, while picking up a caused turnover as well. Fellow senior Tyler Johnson also played well, putting in two goals while keeping the MHU goalkeeper guessing with a game-high 15 shots.

Tyler Wicket had a big game for the Cards as well, putting in three goals on five shots, while scooping up three ground balls and causing a pair of turnovers.

Team leader Bryce Brochu added another goal to his season tally, to put him at 31 goals on the year to date on five shots.

Evan Hodel was a standout for WJU in the restarts, taking a big 19-24 face-offs to give the Cardinals a solid attacking platform and plenty of possession.

Defensively, Senior goalie Joe Amsler was strong once again for WJU, picking up nine saves while serving all 60 minutes in the net.

While taking the victory, WJU started the game slowly, falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter before Johnson finally got the Cards on the board with four minutes to play in the opening period.

It was all Cardinals in the second quarter however, as WJU put in five of the next six goals to take a 6-4 lead heading into the break.

There were tense minutes for WJU in the third period as Mars Hill mounted a comeback, scoring three of the next five goals to close the gap on the Cards, heading into the 4th quarter with only a goal separating the two at an 8-7 WJU lead.

The Cardinals kept their composure however, and DelPrince refused to take the loss scoring twice in in the final six minutes to put the game out of reach for MHU, and giving WJU a hard-fought 10-8 victory.

To the north in Erie, Penn, the Mercyhurst Lakers defeated conference foe Lake Erie College to take the #1 seed in the ECAC standings, giving them home field advantage in the playoffs. WJU will travel to Mercyhurst next week to take on LEC in the conference semifinal.
