Winthrop Sets Goals Record, Downing Presbyterian

ROCK HILL, SC The Winthrop lacrosse team scored a school record 23 goals and Shannon Gallagher notched a season-high nine points Sunday as the Eagles downed the Presbyterian Blue Hose 23-7 on Senior Day.

The Eagles will now enter the Big South Tournament as the fourth seed. Winthrop will host the fifth-seeded Costal Carolina Chanticleers Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Eagle Field.

Prior to the contest, the Eagles honored the first-ever graduating seniors in the women's lacrosse program, Maddi Genovese and Mary Accomando.

Winthrop came out and grabbed the first two goals in the game, in the opening three minutes from the sticks of Abigail Blevins and Shannon Gallagher. After the Blue Hose notched their first Winthrop grabbed three in a row to go up 5-1 with 22:26 on the clock.

The Eagles continued to increase their lead over the final 20 minutes of the first half. Gallagher scored her second and third within a minute to put Winthrop up 8-2 with 17:01 left in the half. Defensively, the Eagles did not allow Presbyterian to score more than one goal in a row as Winthrop took a 13-5 lead into the break.

Winthrop continued its strong play on both sides of the ball in the second half, limiting Presbyterian to only two goals in the second half.

After Presbyterian got the first goal of the half, Winthrop notched the next two from Sydney Cope and Jenna Kasmarik. Presbyterian scored its final goal of the game with 20:22 on the clock. The Eagles scored eight goals over the final 17 minutes of the contest to reach the 23-7 final.

Gallagher's nine points came on six goals and three assists. Abigail Blevins recorded seven points with five goals and two assists while Jenna Kasmarik finished with four goals and one assist. Krista Frowein also scored three goals. Hayley Krause had a game-high nine draw controls while Sydney Cope also picked up six to go along with her three goals and one assist. Camille King picked up her seventh victory of the season, making three saves and allowing five goals.
