Richmond Wins Defensive Battle with La Salle in A10 Semifinal

RICHMOND -- The Richmond Spiders opened the 2014 Atlantic 10 championships with a semifinal win over La Salle 8-4 Friday afternoon at Robins Stadium.

The second-seeded Spiders won both games against the Explorers this season by a combined 13 goals. Richmond advances with a record of 11-6, the most wins for the Spiders in a season since the 2007 season. La Salle ends its season at 11-6.

The Spiders got the first three goals of the game and never looked back. The opening goal came from the stick of junior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) at the 23:27 mark before she assisted on a goal by Charlett Stevenson (Darien, Conn.) almost 10 minutes later. The Doyle assist gave her a new personal best for a single season. She collected an assist in the second half and now stands at 32 for the season, four away from the single-season school record.

Sophomore Brooke Wilson (Ijamsville, Md.) got into the scoring column a minute later for the 3-0 lead.

The teams traded goals the rest of the half, with Wilson scoring again at the 4:11 mark, and junior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colo.) made it 5-2 at the half with a goal with 18 seconds remaining.

The teams were even in ground balls (three) and draws (four), with the Explorers out shooting the Spiders 12-11 in the opening half.

Doyle got her second goal of the game and 30th of the season 10 minutes into the second half and the team split the final four goals of the half for the final score.

Zerr scored twice in the second half for the hat trick her first of the season.

Wilson had two goals to go with Doyle's pair. La Salle's Maggie O'Ferrall led the Explorers with two goals.

Richmond goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Md.) recorded 11 saves in the win, her 10th of the season (10-6).

This was the fifth game this season in which the Spiders held the opponent to five goals or less.

Richmond advances to Sunday's Championship game, against the winner of Duquesne and Massachusetts. The opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
