Limestone Sails by Catawba in Regular Season Finale

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba closed out its lacrosse season with an 18-5 loss to second-ranked Limestone on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. The visiting Saints improve to 16-1, while the Catawba Indians finish up at 7-8.

Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg), one of a dozen Catawba seniors, led the Indians with two goals and an assist. Senior John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) assisted on Catawba's first two goals of the game to set a new career record with 86. Junior Adam Hebert (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic HS) had a goal and an assist.

Limestone wasted little time in grabbing the lead as Kevin Reisman won the opening face-off and Todd Nakasuji scored within nine seconds. The Saints were up 3-0 before Scheich fed Ridolfo and Hebert for goals to pull Catawba within 3-2 at the 6:15 mark of the opening quarter. Limestone went on a six-goal run after that until Ridolfo scored again with 4:28 left before the half.

Senior Tyler Ulrich (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata HS) scored the third straight goal for Catawba to start the second half to close the gap to 8-5 at the 12:31 mark of the quarter. The Saints scored three goals over the next three and half minutes to regain control then pulled away in the final quarter.

Nakasuji tallied four goals for Limestone, while Kyle Rhatigan scored three goals and added three helpers. Joshua Williams and Mike Messenger also picked up three goals for the Saints.

Limestone held a decided 52-20 edge in shots with goalie Patrick Sheridan making just three saves. Reisman went 19 of 25 in face-offs for the Saints.

Senior goalie Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) played the first quarter for the Indians and stopped nine shots. Freshman Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Ponte Vedra HS) recorded a dozen saves over the final three quarters.

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Behind the play of freshman faceoff specialist Kevin Reisman (West Babylon, N.Y.) and a defense that forced nine turnovers, No. 2 Limestone (16-1, 4-0 CC) closed out the regular season with an impressive 18-5 victory over Catawba (7-8, 4-3 SAC) in an NCAA Division II men's lacrosse game on Saturday, May 3.

Reisman, currently leading NCAA DII in both groundballs per game (9.69) and faceoff winning percentage (.711) entering the night, showed why as he went 19 of 25 at the center "X" and collected 12 groundballs. He pushed those numbers up to 9.82 and .716, respectively.

Among those benefitting greatly from getting the ball better 76-percent of the time were senior attack Todd Nakasuji (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) with four goals and sophomore attack Kyle Rhatigan (Holbrook, N.Y.) with three goals and three assists. They were joined by sophomore midfielder Mike Messenger (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) with three goals and an assist and senior midfielder Joshua Williams (Davidsonville, Md.) with a hat trick.

Sophomore attack Vinny Ricci (Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada) added a pair of scores, an assist and five groundballs while senior defenseman Anthony Starnino (Rochester, N.Y.) caused five turnovers and had five groundballs. Sophomore goal keeper Patrick Sheridan (Fairport, N.Y.) went the distance in goal, allowing just five goals while making three saves on 20 shot attempts. He improves to 16-1 on the year.

An absolute dominance on faceoffs by Reisman, to the tune of 10 of 11 to start the game, allowed Limestone's potent offense to hit on all cylinders early as they built an 8-2 lead midway through the second quarter. The Saints notched three in a row over the first six minutes of the game before the Indians responded with back-to-back scores to cut it to 3-2 by the 6:15 mark of the first quarter.
