#15 UMW Falls, 10-8, at Messiah in NCAA Tourney

GRANTHAM, PA - The fifteenth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team spent the entire sixty-minute game on the heels of Messiah College, but could never find the go-ahead tally in a 10-8 loss to the Falcons in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday in Grantham, PA.

Messiah jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a goal from Jessica VanHook at 2:05 of the first period assisted by Shannan Finch. Pickering then drew the Eagles to with one at 21:19 on a dish from Finney. Messiah VanHook then posted a key goal at 23:11 assisted by Finch. UMW's O'Leary closed out the scoring for the half with :46 remaining with an unassisted effort to make the score 6-5 at the half.

The next 13 minutes of play were marked by strong physical defensive play on both ends of the field and big saves from Messiah Janelle Groff and the Eagles' Meredith Dietrick (Mountain Lakes, NJ). Messiah's Abby Boyd finally broke the ice at 57:54 running through the UMW defense and firing a shot to the top left hand shelf for a Falcon lead of 9-8.
