Rohde Leads No. 1 Salisbury Past Denison, 13-5

SALISBURY, Md. * The Salisbury men's lacrosse team (18-0) advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon with a victory over Denison College (10-6), 13-5. Senior attackman Ryan Rohde (Glenmoore, PA/Malvern Prep) led the offense with five goals, while junior midfielder Matt Dasinger (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) contributed four scores on the afternoon.

The Big Red opened the scoring in the first half, as freshman midfielder Dan Maude (Wayne, PA/The Haverford School) tallied an unassisted goal at the 13:01 mark. Salisbury's Dasinger then tallied his first two goals, one unassisted at the 12:44 mark and another at the 10:44 mark with the assist to Eric Bishop (Media, PA/Penncrest), to give Salisbury the edge, 2-1. Denison's Ted Douglass (Englewood, CO/Kent Denver) then tied the game with a goal at the 5:26 mark, with the assist to Ricky Mackesssy (Hudson, OH/Hudson).

Salisbury's offense exploded late in the second quarter. After sixteen minutes without any scores, Dasinger tallied his third goal of the afternoon, with Brett Yoder (Parkton, MD/Hereford) picking up the assist. Mackessy then tied the game again for Denison with a score at the 4:22 mark before Salisbury scored four straight goals. Rohde scored at the 4:09 mark with the assist to Kylor Berkman (Salisbury, MD/Parkside), and then Rohde scored with the man advantage at the 3:06 mark with the assist to Jimmy Creighton (Huntington, NY/Huntington). Senior midfielder Mike Hurley (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-SD) then added an unassisted tally at the 2:10 mark, then Rohde added a third score in the quarter with fifty-eight seconds remaining, taking a pass from Bishop to the back of the net to give Salisbury the lead at halftime, 7-3.

In the third quarter, Salisbury had the lone tally, as Dan Boyer (Millersville, MD/Mt. St. Joseph's) scored at the 14:08 mark. It was Boyer's team-leading sixtieth goal of the season.

Salisbury outscored the Big Red, 5-2, in the fourth quarter to close the game. Dasinger tallied his fourth goal of the game at the 12:01 mark, followed by Rohde's fourth and fifth goals of the game at the 10:33 and 10:09 marks, respectively. Mike Edwards (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) would then add his first goal of the game, an unassisted strike at the 9:26 mark. Denison would then score two goals in the game, one from P.J. Hendrick (Newton, Mass/Rivers School) at the 7:13 mark and one from Clay Wawner (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello). Bishop would add a late goal to extend the lead to the final score, 13-5.

In net, Salisbury goalie Max Zarchin (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) stopped eleven of sixteen shots on goal in fifty-five minutes of work to earn his seventeenth win of the season. Alex Baruch (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) stopped ten of twenty-three shots on goal to take the loss, dropping his record to ten wins against six defeats.

Salisbury held the advantage in shots, 36-20, and ground balls, 44-20. Salisbury dominated the face-offs as well, winning eighteen of twenty-one, led by Ryan DeRose (Oswego, NY/Oswego), who won 8-of-10 face-offs; and Berkman, who was a perfect 6-for-6 on face-offs.

Salisbury will now await the winner of the game between No. 9-ranked Washington College and No. 7-ranked Lynchburg College for their next contest in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinals. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, at 4:00 p.m. at Sea Gull Field.
