No. 5 Cortland Cruises by Colorado College, 19-11

CORTLAND, N.Y. Junior Andrea Venditti (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored seven goals and assisted on another as Cortland defeated Colorado College, 19-11, in an NCAA Division III second round contest. The Red Dragons improve to 18-0 on the season, tying a school record for wins in a season, and will play in the national quarterfinals on Sunday at home versus either Nazareth or Franklin & Marshall.

Junior Jennifer Willis (Huntington) added three goals and three assists, senior Erin Lynn (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored twice and assisted on three goals and junior Gina Fazio (Watertown/General Brown) recorded two goals and two assists for the Red Dragons. Junior Ali Bourgal (Sachem) finished with two goals and one assist and junior Jill Battaglia (Amherst) scored twice. Senior goalie Regina Grosso (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) stopped eight shots in 42:31 of action. Senior Michelle Zimmer (Skaneateles) made two saves and allowed one goal over the final 17:29.

Junior Kate Fitzgerald (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) led Colorado College (9-7) with four goals. Junior Kerry O'Shaughnessy (Denver, CO/Kent Denver) and junior Robin Harvey (Winchester, MA) each finished with two goals and one assist and senior Helen Sneath (Wayne, PA/Radnor) scored twice. Senior Alana Dalton (Aurora, CO/St. Mary's Academy) started in goal for the Tigers. She made four saves and allowed 12 goals in 33:20. Freshman Jess Van Doren (Boise, ID) played 26:40 in the middle of the game and made two saves.

Cortland scored three times in the first 3:29 of the game to take a 3-0 lead, but Colorado answered with the next three goals, two by Fitzgerald, and tied the game 11:17 into the half. Lynn, however, scored 10 seconds later and Battaglia tallied 29 seconds after that to give the Red Dragons a 5-3 lead. Cortland proceeded to score the next five goals, three by Venditti and led 10-3 with 9:24 left in the half.

Colorado closed to within 10-5 by halftime, but Cortland scored the first four goals of the second half, the last three by Venditti, and led 14-5 with 22:03 to go. After the teams traded goals, the Tigers scored four straight, two by Sneath, to draw back within 15-10 with 7:29 remaining. Cortland scored four of the final five goals to pull away.
