#3 Salisbury Downs #13 Dickinson in NCAAs, 11-6

SALISBURY, Md. * The No. 3-ranked Sea Gulls' women's lacrosse team (17-1) defeated the Red Devils of No. 13-ranked Dickinson College (13-5), 11-6, to advance to the Regional Championships set for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Athletic Complex.

The Sea Gulls will take on the Lions of the College of New Jersey, who defeated Washington & Lee, 16-6, on Saturday afternoon. It will be a re-match against the team that turned aside the Sea Gulls both in the NCAA Championship, 9-7, last season and the on April 15 in Ewing, New Jersey, when the Lions defeated the Sea Gulls, 11-9.

Senior attacker Amanda Tack (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) and senior midfielder Jessica Froats (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) each tallied three points on the afternoon to lead the Sea Gull offense to victory.

The Sea Gull offense started the game off fast, scoring five unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the game. Junior midfielder Katie Simmons (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) opened the scoring, converting a free position shot for the unassisted score at the 26:29 mark. Senior midfielder Erin McCarthy (Gaithersburg, MD/Holy Cross) followed with a score at the 22:04 mark with the assist to Froats.

Other scorers in the opening minutes included Jessica Wirth (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) with an unassisted score at the 16:36 mark; and Robyn Bishop (Columbia, MD/River Hill) at the 13:45 mark; and McCarthy with her second goal at the 12:38 mark. Tack assisted on both Bishop's and McCarthy's scores.

At the 11:12 mark, Dickinson's Amy Jennings (Baltimore, MD/McDonough) converted a free position shot for a goal to get the Red Devils on the board. Salisbury then closed the first half with three more goals, with Stephanie Shores (Glen Burnie, MD/Old Mill), Sue Ackermann (Sykesville, MD/Liberty), and Liz Funk (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) scoring the goals. Froats assisted on Shores's goal, while Tack added another assist on Ackermann's goal.

In the second half, Dickinson closed the gap, outscoring the Sea Gulls, 5-3, but it was not enough for the victory. Dickinson's Laura Williams (Chestertown, MD/Gunston Day) opened the scoring in the half, converting another free position shot. Salisbury answered with two more goals to stretch the lead to 10-2 with goals from Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) and Froats with her first score.

The Red Devils, however, would not go away, as Dickinson answered with two goals to pull within six, 10-4, as Katie Austin (Warwick, RI/The Wheeler School) and Lizzie Cone (Hockessin, DE/Ursuline Academy) tallied unassisted goals. Ackermann added another score for the Sea Gulls, as she converted a free position shot to make it a seven-goal deficit, 11-4. Dickinson tallied two more scores, with the first goal by Jena Boccetti (Hockessin, DE/St. Mark's) and a second goal from Williams.

Salisbury goalie Ali Goetz (Fallston, MD/Fallston) stopped six of twelve shots on goal to earn her seventeenth win against one defeat. Dickinson goalie Gabby Joffie (Jamaica, NY/Mercersburg Academy) stopped fourteen of twenty-five shots on goal to take the loss.

Salisbury outshot Dickinson, 36-22, and held the advantage in ground balls, 31-24. The Red Devils had the advantage in draw controls, 13-7.
