No. 5 Cortland Advances Over No. 13 Stevens, 16-7

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Mike Felice (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) recorded career highs of five goals and seven total points as SUNY Cortland defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 16-7, in an NCAA Division III tournament second-round game. The Red Dragons (15-3) advance to the national quarterfinals for the fourth straight season and will host Middlebury College on Wednesday, May 17, at a time to be announced. Stevens, the Knickerbocker Lacrosse League champion and an NCAA participant each of the last six years, finishes the season 14-4.

Sophomore Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and senior Kyle Lambert (Brentwood) each finished with three goals and one assist for the Red Dragons. Senior Mike Abbott (Syracuse/Nottingham) added two goals and one assist, while senior Matt O'Connell (Camillus/West Genesee) and junior Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley) registered a goal and three assists each. Senior goalie Ben Gaebel (Deferiet/Carthage) stopped 10 shots for the victory.

Junior Matt Althauser (Bellevue, WA/Bellevue Senior) and junior Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) led the Ducks with three goals apiece. Junior Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, CT/Immaculate) made nine saves, seven in the first half.

Cortland jumped out to a 2-0 lead four minutes into the game on goals by Abbott and O'Connell, but Stevens scored the next three goals while keeping the Red Dragons off the scoreboard for more than 19 minutes. Althauser and junior Patrick Bailey (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) scored in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2, and Althauser's goal 44 seconds into the second quarter gave the Ducks their only lead at 3-2.

The hosts responded to score the next seven goals and hold Stevens scoreless for more than a 20-minute span. Felice scored an extra-man goal with 6:57 left in the half and tallied again 17 seconds later. Heath connected for an extra-man goal with 5:53 remaining and scored again less than a minute later and Cortland led 6-3 at halftime. Sophomore Adam Hyde (West Seneca/West Seneca East), Simensky and Felice scored the first three goals of the third quarter, with Felice's goal on a man-up opportunity, and the Red Dragons led 9-3 with 10:33 left in the period.

Stevens got back within 9-5 on two Bielicky goals midway through the third, but the Red Dragons scored three straight and eventually led 12-6 after three quarters. Felice and Lambert each netted two goals in the fourth, with Althauser scoring Stevens' goal in the quarter.

Cortland held a 36-29 edge in shots and a 45-32 ground ball advantage. The Red Dragons won 19-of-27 faceoffs, including 12-of-16 in the second half. Sophomore Josh Cittadino (Baldwin) won 14-of-19 faceoffs in the contest and led Cortland with 10 ground balls. Junior Cheney Raymond (Camillus/West Genesee) added eight ground balls.

(May 13, 2006) – Trailing 3-2 midway through the second quarter, fifth-ranked SUNY Cortland scored seven unanswered goals in the span of 11:24 as the Red Dragons advanced to play Middlebury College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship with a 16-7 victory over 13th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday in Cortland, N.Y. With the loss, the Ducks closed out the 2006 campaign with an overall record of 14-4, which marks the most wins in a season in school history.

The Red Dragons (15-3) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the game on goals by senior midfielders Mike Abbott (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Matt O’Connell (Camillus, N.Y.). Stevens responded with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead early in the second quarter.
