#4 TCNJ Edges #3 Salisbury to Reach Final Four

SALISBURY, Md. * The Salisbury women's lacrosse season ended on Sunday afternoon as the team fell in defeat, 6-5, at the hands of the Lions of the College of New Jersey in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Regional Championship game. It was the third time in the past three tries that the Lions have defeated the Sea Gulls. Senior Amanda Tack (Ellicott City, MD/River Hill) recorded four points on the afternoon, chipping in a goal and three assists in the loss.

The Lions opened the scoring at the 27:47 mark, as senior midfielder Lauren Dougher (Blue Bell, PA/Mt. St. Joseph's) scored an unassisted goal. Salisbury would answer with three straight goals, with Katie Simmons (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) scoring at the 21:18 mark with the assist to Tack; Ani Khatchatoorian (Gaithersburg, MD/Northwest) scoring at the 20:04 mark; and Sue Ackermann (Skyesville, MD/Liberty) scoring at the 13:33 mark with Tack recording her second assist.

Lions' sophomore midfielder Karen Doane (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) would cut the Sea Gull lead to one, 3-2, converting a free position attempt at the 12:22 mark before Tack scored her lone goal of game off a pass from Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) at the 6:29 mark to give Salisbury the lead at halftime, 4-2.

In the second half, the Lions dominated the Sea Gulls, scoring four goals to Salisbury's one. Doane chipped in another goal at the 26:14 mark, converting her second free position shot of the game. Senior midfielder Bridget Bigley (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic) would then tie the game at four as she took a pass from Dougher at the 16:46 mark.

Salisbury would briefly take the lead again as Erin McCarthy (Gaithersburg, MD/Holy Cross) scored off of Tack's fourth assist at the 11:01 mark, but Bigley would tie it again fifty-three seconds later with an unassisted score. Lions' freshman Rachel Gordon (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) would score the deciding goal on a free position attempt at the 5:43 mark to seal the victory for the Lions.

The Sea Gulls had two goals wiped away in the second half, as freshman midfielder Holly Johnson (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley) appeared to score, but it was disallowed by a dangerous shot call. Ackermann appeared to score her second of the game as well, but that goal was disallowed because of a crease violation.

Salisbury goalie Ali Goetz (Fallston, MD/Fallston) stopped eight of fourteen shots on goal, but suffered just her second loss of the season. Senior goalie Megan Marquardt (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) stopped twelve of seventeen shots on goal to earn the win for the Lions.

Salisbury held slight advantages in shots, 22-18, and ground balls, 23-13, while the Lions had the advantage in draw controls, 7-6. The free position attempts pushed the Lions to victory, converting three of four attempts, while Salisbury failed to convert on their lone attempt. The Lions (13-2) will now take on the winner of Middlebury (15-1) and Bowdoin (15-4) on Saturday, May 20, at DeBaun Field on the campus of the Stevens Institute of Technology. The loss in the regional championship drops the Sea Gulls to 17-2.
