#13 JMU Edges #11 Richmond in NCAA First Round

HARRISONBURG, Va., May 14, 2006 -- James Madison took a four-goal second-half lead over Richmond and then withstood a Spider comeback to pull out a 9-8 victory in the first round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament Sunday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex. JMU won its seventh straight game and improved to 15-4. Richmond saw its four-game win streak end as the Spiders concluded their season with a 16-4 record.

The Dukes have won 10 of their last 11 contests and advance to the May 20 quarterfinal round, where they will play the winner of Sunday's game between top-seeded Duke and Holy Cross.

The game was tied 5-5 after UR senior Allison Nuzzi (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) converted a free-position attempt with 26:47 remaining in the second period. The Dukes then scored four times in less than five minutes to build a 9-5 advantage with 20:46 left.

The run of four straight goals began with an unassisted score by junior Kelly Berger (Columbia, Md./Hammond) at the 25:19 mark. Berger then fed junior Lynlea Cronin (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) for a goal at 24:10. Junior Maria Bosica (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) pushed the lead to 8-5 with an unassisted score at 22:48. An unassisted goal by sophomore Julie Stone (Annandale, Va./Annandale) at 20:46 upped the lead to 9-5.

However, the Dukes would not score again while Richmond inched back into the match. Sophomore Claire Cunniff's (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) goal at 13:53 made it 9-6. Then senior Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored off a pass from freshman Mandy Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) at 5:05 to close the gap to 9-7.

With under two minutes to play and JMU running a stall, Richmond intercepted an errant pass and worked the ball around until Friend scored with 56 seconds remaining to get the Spiders within one, 9-8. JMU controlled the ensuing draw but then turned the ball over. Richmond got a shot off with 15 seconds left, but JMU senior goalkeeper Livvy King (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) made a save. The Spiders briefly had possession, but JMU's Griffin checked the ball out of Cunniff's stick and the Dukes ran out the clock.

The first half was scoreless for the opening 10 minutes before Friend gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 19:35. JMU, however, ran off three straight goals to go ahead 3-1 at 11:35. Freshman Kim Griffin (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) scored off a pass from Berger and then Cronin and Berger netted unassisted goals.

Richmond responded with three consecutive goals of its own. Friend scored at 9:24, then the Spiders scored back-to-back goals within 20 seconds. Junior Morghan Vahue (Victor, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) got the ball in the net at 6:37, and McGuire put Richmond up 4-3 with a score at 6:17. JMU freshman Jess Brophy's (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) goal with 1:22 left in the half sent the game into intermission tied at 4-4.

JMU was led by Cronin with three goals and Berger with two goals and three assists. Richmond's Friend, McGuire and Nuzzi each scored twice, and Friend also had an assist. King finished with eight saves, while senior goalkeeper Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass./Governor Dummer Academy) made seven saves.
