#3 Duke Sails by Holy Cross in First Round, 18-2

Durham, N.C. - Despite two weather delays, the top-seeded Blue Devils were able to pull away from Holy Cross in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for an 18-2 victory. Kristen Waagbo set the Duke single season assist record and Katie Chrest tallied seven points to help lead Duke to their sixth victory all-time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Blue Devils didn't waste any time kickstarting the offense as Waagbo found Chrest just 1:13 into the game for the first goal. The assist was the 30th of the season for Waagbo, matching Tricia Martin for the most in Duke history for a single season. Waagbo would later add an assist on the Blue Devils' sixth goal to break the record.

Duke jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the first 8:07 of the contest before the lightning came and forced the first 30-minute delay. Waagbo and Leigh Jester helped Duke jump out of the gates with two goals apiece. Following the delay, the Blue Devils came out of the locker room and picked up right where they left off, scoring six straight goals over a nine-minute span. Amy Archambault put Holy Cross on the board with 11:25 remaining in the half on a free position shot. With 6:51 remaining Chrest scored her third goal of the half to put Duke on top 12-1 when the second weather delay came.

The Blue Devils once again came out of the delay strong with two more goals to close the half. They led 14-1, the fourth time this season they scored 14 or more goals in the first half. Chrest led the charge for the Blue Devils with three goals and four assists in the first half. It was the second time in her career she had four assists and the 13th time in school history, with four coming this season. It was the fourth time this year Chrest tallied seven points in a game. Waagbo chipped in three of her four goals in the first half to go along with a pair of assists while Jester scored four of Duke's first eight goals.

Carolyn Davis scored just 30 seconds into the second half for her second goal of the game and Waagbo added her fourth to put Duke ahead 16-1 with 22:05 left in regulation. Patricia Sutton scored on a free position shot with just under 12 minutes to play to give the Crusaders two goals in the game but goals by Kim Wathey and Jessica McBride would seal the 18-2 victory for the Blue Devils. The 16-goal win for Duke was the largest in school history in the NCAA Tournament. The previous high was a 17-3 win over Temple in the first round of the 2001 tournament. It was the 11th time this season the Blue Devils scored 15 or more goals in a game.

Jester recorded eight ground balls to go along with her four goals as the Blue Devils tallied 42 ground balls in the game and held a 43-14 advantage in total shots. Chrest added three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers to her game-high seven points. Megan Huether had another strong performance in goal with seven saves and just two goals allowed in 48:03 minutes to go along with four ground balls. Regan Bosch played the final 11:57 minutes with three saves and no goals allowed.

The Blue Devils will move on to the second round where they will host James Madison next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium. James Madison, the eighth seed in the tournament pulled out a close 9-8 win over Richmond in the first round on Sunday. Duke holds a 4-1 all-time record against the Dukes with three straight wins, the last coming in 2003.
