#1 Salisbury Tops #9 Washington C. in Quarterfinals

SALISBURY, Md. * The Salisbury men's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Shoremen of Washington College, 8-4, at Sea Gull Stadium. Freshman midfielder Kylor Berkman (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) dominated the opposition, tallying four points two goals and two assists on the afternoon.

The Shoremen opened the scoring in the first quarter, as senior attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) took a pass from sophomore attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) for the score at the 9:18 mark. The Shoremen would then keep the Sea Gulls off the scoreboard for the remainder of the quarter, the first time the Sea Gulls have been held scoreless in the opening frame.

In the second, Read would add another goal at the 11:51 mark to give the Shoremen a two goal advantage, 2-0. Senior attackman Eric Bishop (Media, PA/Penncrest) would then put the Sea Gulls on the board, cutting the Shoremen lead to one, 2-1, with a score at the 7:46 mark, taking the pass from Ryan Rohde (Glenmoore, PA/Malvern Prep). Washington would answer again at the 7:19 mark, as sophomore attackman Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph's) took a pass from Read for the score to push the lead back to two, 3-1.

Salisbury would then begin to dominate the score-sheet, scoring the next seven goals, including the final two scores of the half by Berkman, both of the unassisted variety, as the teams went into halftime tied at three.

The Sea Gull offense would explode in the third quarter for four goals, with Rohde opening the scoring at the 11:09 mark, taking a pass from Berkman for the score. Senior attackman Dan Boyer (Millersville, MD/Mt. St. Joseph's) would then score one of his three goals on the afternoon at the 7:52 mark. Senior midfielder Mike Hurley (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-SD) added a goal of his own at the 4:07 mark, taking the pass from senior Jimmy Creighton (Huntington, NY/Huntington). Boyer would then score his second goal with thirty-nine seconds remaining in the quarter, taking a pass from Bishop.

Boyer would add his third of the game with 10:57 remaining in the game, with Berkman picking up his second assist of the game. Washington's Read would add his second goal of the game, taking the pass from Jimmy Kielek with the man advantage to pull within four goals, 8-4. In the final frantic minutes, the Sea Gulls clamped down defensively to prevent the Shoremen from getting any closer.

Sea Gulls goalie Max Zarchin (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) stopped six of ten shots on goal to earn his seventeenth win of the season against zero defeats. Washington College senior goalie Kevin Thibadeau (Cheshire, CT/Avon Old Farms) stopped fifteen of twenty-three shots on goal, but suffered his fifth defeat in nineteen decisions.

Salisbury out shot Washington College, 33-18, and held the advantage in ground balls, 30-22. Washington won the battle of the face-offs, winning nine of fifteen decisions, with all face-offs taken by junior midfielder Mike Hughes (Pasadena, MD/Mt. St. Joseph's). Senior midfielder Chris Sgritta (Darien, CT/Darien) led the Sea Gulls, winning all five of his face-offs on the afternoon.

Salisbury will now take on the Maroons of Roanoke College, who defeated Gettysburg College in thrilling fashion, 13-12, on Wednesday afternoon in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The game is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, May 21, at 1:00 p.m. at Sea Gull Field.

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Host Salisbury University, the top-ranked team in Division III and three-time defending NCAA Division III Champion, scored seven unanswered goals to record an 8-4 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse quarterfinal victory over ninth-ranked Washington College this afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium. The Sea Gulls improved to 19-0 on the season with the win, while the Shoremen finished their season at 14-5.
