Boston, MA (June 13, 2006) – The roster for the 5th Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game is set, and it pits the best of the MLL against the best from Team USA. The MLL All-Stars will face-off against Team USA on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at Nickerson Field in Boston, MA, home of the Boston Cannons according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. The MLL All-Stars are led in goal by five-time All-Star and three-time MLL Goalie of the Year, Greg Cattrano.
This will be the fifth All-Star Game Cattrano has participated in during his illustrious MLL career, three of which he started. Along with his prior All-Star selections, Cattrano has started in each of the five MLL Championship Games, winning two, and was named the Bud Light MVP in 2002. Cattrano has started the first four games for the Long Island Lizards in 2006, posting a record of 1-3 with a 13.95 goals against average and a .509 save percentage.
Cattrano will be backed by Tillman Johnson of the Los Angeles Riptide. This will be Johnson’s second All-Star appearance, the first coming last season. As a rookie, Johnson led the MLL in goals against average, letting up 12.65 goals through nine games, and stopped 64% of the shots he faced. Through three games for the Riptide in 2006, Johnson has posted an 0-3 record, while allowing 17.09 goals against and stopping 50% of the shots he’s faced.
Cattrano and Johnson bolster a backline that is made up of the Pride’s Ryan McClay, Brodie Merrill of the Rattlers, the Bayhawks Shawn Nadelen, the Cannons Chris Passavia and Brian Spallina of the Barrage.
In his fourth year in the league, McClay makes his second All-Star appearance, the first being in 2005. McClay was selected by New Jersey with the fifth pick in the 2003 MLL Collegiate Draft, and has played in all four games for the Pride this season, picking up four groundballs along the way.
Merrill, making his second All-Star Game appearance, joined the Rattlers in the off-season after winning the 2005 MLL Championship with the Baltimore Bayhawks. With the Bayhawks, Merrill scored three goals, had one assist and picked up 52 ground balls in 11 games, good enough to be named MLL Rookie of the Year. Merrill hasn’t let up in 2006, scoring two goals through four games while scooping up 30 ground balls.
Nadelen has been with the Bayhawks since being selected 15th overall in the 2001 MLL Collegiate Draft. Nadelen, who makes his first All-Star appearance, helped Baltimore win its first MLL Championship in 2005, starting all 12 games. Nadelen was named to the All-MLL team last season and has continued his success in 2006, anchoring the Bayhawks defense through four games, collecting five groundballs along the way.
