No. 1 Salisbury Downs Virginia Wesleyan in Opener
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A new season and win streak began for the top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon on the road against Virginia Wesleyan where the Sea Gulls won 14-5 before a crowd of 1,045.
Salisbury (1-0) last season saw its NCAA lacrosse record 69-game win streak (2003-2006) snapped in the national championship game to SUNY Cortland. That streak ranks fifth all-time in NCAA history for any sport in any division and is second in any men's sport behind the legendary UCLA men's basketball streak of 88 games (1971-1974).
The Sea Gulls received three goals apiece from juniors Matt Hickman and Greg Titus while sophomore Kylor Berkman added two goals and two assists and junior Kyle Burto netted two goals in the win. Junior Brett Yoder led all Sea Gulls with three assists and added a late goal.
Salisbury jumped out early on Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) as the Gulls scored the game's first three goals. SU led 5-2 after the first quarter and 7-4 at the half. The Sea Gulls took over in the second half as they outscored the Marlins 7-1.
Senior goalie Max Zarchin made seven saves for the Gulls in between the pipes. The SU offense outshot VWC 42-20 (28-10 in the first half) and won 13-of-23 faceoffs. The Marlins were paced by Jordan Kenney's three goals.
The Sea Gulls will open up its Capital Athletic Conference schedule at 6:30 pm this Monday night under the lights against Marymount (Va.) University at Washington and Lee High School.
