Washington & Lee Routs Dallas, 17-1, in Opener
DALLAS, Texas. * Senior midfielder Maggie Megear (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) recorded a hat trick as the 11th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team opened its 2007 season with a 17-1 victory at the University of Dallas on Monday afternoon.
The Generals jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 9:53 of the contest en route to a 9-0 halftime advantage. In the second stanza, the Generals scored the first five goals and led 14-0 with 16:00 minutes remaining in the contest. The Crusaders notched their lone goal of the game with 9:25 to play, but W&L closed out the contest with three more goals for the 17-1 final margin.
Megear paced the Blue and White's scoring effort, while senior attacker Karina Schless (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) registered two goals and two assists. Junior attacker Christine Bender (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and freshman attacker Britten Matthews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) both totaled two goals and one assist. Seniors Avery Lovejoy (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Mallory Lobisser (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Lakeside) each added a pair of goals, while senior Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) contributed one goal and two assists.
The trio of junior Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury), sophomore Ali Hillyard (Media, Pa./Episcopal) and freshman Eliza Van Beuren (Woodville, Va./Covenant) each played 20 minutes in between the pipes, posting no saves.
The Generals return to the field on Saturday when they hosts No. 13 St. Mary's (Md.) at the W&L Turf Field at 3:00 pm.
